is it a b or a d? also to try and solve your problem heres a link if your tranny is really busted, I have tried it myself, and if done correctly, it will restore your reverse

Common Honda STD trans issue. The rear gear has no synchro, so it will grind sometimes. If it won't go into reverse immediately, put it into 1st/2nd and move forward slightly...then put it into reverse.

define "engage the clutch".......as I think you are disengaging it.

what he said. just replaced mine to a bad input shaft bearing. if its a throw out bearing it will make the noise with the clutch pressed in. if its a input shaft bearing it will make the noise when the clutch is NOT pressed
