Default Cheap Daily CRX Suspension

Hey guys, I am looking for opinions on recent economy choices for decent shocks/springs for a daily driver.

My KSports that came with my car seem pretty much completely blown, I think driving 100+ miles a day 5 days a week on Houston roads was just too much for them.

Just looking for an economy option that will last for daily use and preferably handle at least a little better than stock.

For a simple daily driver application, for a stock vehicle , being stock driven, I'd go with kyb.

I guess I should narrow this down some. Replacement KSport coilover shocks are $135 each, not sure yet if I will have to also buy replacement lower mounts as well, since at some point they apparently switched from 50mm to 52mm shock bodies.

So lets say I can get my KSport coilovers working for $135 a corner.

Looking at Summit I see the following options for Shocks: https://www.summitracing.com/search/...rder=Ascending

$43.97 Gabriel G55803 - Gabriel Shocks and Struts
$45.57 KYB Shocks & Struts 341094 - KYB Excel-G Gas Shocks and Struts
$46.97 Monroe Shocks & Struts 71231 - Monroe Shocks & Struts
$51.97 Gabriel G55787 - Gabriel Shocks and Struts
$52.97 KYB Shocks & Struts 341135 - KYB Excel-G Gas Shocks and Struts
$52.97 KYB Shocks & Struts 341136 - KYB Excel-G Gas Shocks and Struts
$86.97 Tokico Shocks HU2847 - Tokico HP Series Shocks and Struts
$89.97 KYB Shocks & Struts 741008 - KYB AGX Adjustable Gas Shocks and Struts
$89.97 KYB Shocks & Struts 741009 - KYB AGX Adjustable Gas Shocks and Struts
$92.97 KYB Shocks & Struts 741007 - KYB AGX Adjustable Gas Shocks and Struts
$111.97 Bilstein 24-013819 - Bilstein Shocks and Struts
$123.97 Bilstein 24-013802 - Bilstein Shocks and Struts
$134.56 Koni 8041-1153SPORT - Koni Sport Shocks and Struts
$137.97 Bilstein 24-013826 - Bilstein Shocks and Struts

So my 2 questions:

1: Do you guys think purchasing $135 each KSport shocks would be equivalent in handling to the Koni Yellows, which would be about the same price? Or would the Koni's be a better handling, more dependable choice?

2: What would be the minimum on this list that you guys think would perform about like stock shocks for performance and have a good lifespan with stock springs? Or ~400/300lb KSport springs.

The Tokico's are built pretty good and ride slightly "stiffer" than OEM ones.

KYB adjustable IIRC are garbage. The KYB Excel will perform just like a stock unit as they make struts for a lot of OEM manufactures.

tokico blues are slightly better than stock. if its going to be used for stock things, Id say those.

kyb adjustables were something I was considering for my build, but ultimately went for koni yellows.....for whatever its worth

Neuspeed or H&R soft kit on typical OTS shocks.

Upgrade to Koni STR.T (orange) if needed.

Understand the adjustments in Koni yellows before buying, aka rebound only adjustments. Most complaints are about compression harshness.

Dampers make the biggest difference in handling, ride quality and overall comfort.

IMO, from your list the Bilstiens or Konis are worth it.

Out of budget, if you're going for "aftermarket" I'd really look at the PIC Performance. Similar priced setups are not on the same level for the money.

Check your PMs.

I would love some decent suspension, but even if I die of extreme old age, I am still going to be paying on student debt until then. I mean, I rock a dead stock 62hp HF motor instead of a 200hp B18 because I cant swing the $500 it would cost to replace some rods or buy an imported B20z block.

Idk, I designed a gun trigger recently that a bunch of people seem interested in, it will probably amount to nothing, but maybe I will make a couple extra bucks on that and be able to afford some suspension upgrades.

IMO I believe the guy was exaggerating about spring rates, but IIRC he claimed it was Koni STR.T with 12k springs? I say they were maybe 8-10k at most.

Regardless the dampening was literally perfect rebound and compression for the car. I enjoyed watching it absorb the highway imperfections. Super comfortable, and still capable.

When I wrote aftermarket, I really meant coilover, and was pointing at pure KSports replacements.

Also, had a buddy modify to fit S2k OEM rears on his 91' EF. You can maybe try that budget/creativity + performance/comfort

STR.T's are tuned to have nearly the same compression setting as the OTS yellows, just using a different method getting there.

9k/500 lbs is about the limit for the yellows before you need the double adjustable. In a lightweight CRX H&R race on yellows was too much, but that might have been from excessive spring preload, to keep the spring seated at all times.

That's true we're talking about a 2200lb EG coupe with the SRT.T so.

The Bilstien's are still me #1 option for Joel.

Ok, so lets say I get street springs like Neuspeed streets or something similar in the 275F 225R range.

~$50/corner - The KYB Excell-Gs
~$75/corner - Koni STR.Ts
~$110-140/corner - Bilsteins

How big a difference are we talking here between these 3 levels? And keep in mind this is daily driving on Houston roads, mostly freeways and surface streets. The ability to take a pothole and not fuck up a wheel/suspension or loose control of the car is more important than maximum cornering capability.

Also bear in mind I rock Pirellii P4 Four Seasons Plus tires with a treadwear rating of 760 on the front and garbage on the back, so there is going to be a severe limit to my maximum handling no matter what suspension I have.

H&R is great quality as well.

And the B6's are meant for more moddest springs like Neuspeed/H&R with modest drop. You may just get a bit more comfort from the H&R. And that way you can sell the KSports as a full kit to some stance-scrapper for stupid cheap.

High speed dampening should keep the confidence up once you get used to the roll, basically psuedo-turn in, to get the car @ max roll, then turn in and it will handle where you toss it. It will feel premium OEM (because the roll lol)

The good high-speed dampening should just absorb any imperfections in the road and keep it predictable and stable.

You likely loose the "turn in" response since you're going all around softer, but the car will hold a lot better than expected, you just have to psuedo-initiate the turn in to get to "max roll", then turn it, and the stiffness in the damper will show. Somewhat differently then you may be used to.

Compared to the KSports you'll likely see more roll where the Koni/Bilstien will be much less than the KYB, but don't don't be afraid of that, then high-speed dampening should be marginal better.

"Usually cheaper" coilovers are weak on high speed dampening such as the Fortune Autos - more noticeable when you have better suspension like B12-B16 Bilstiens you can run back to back. I have not tested KSPORTS before, so this is a wildly extrapolated prejudice based on experience.

Plus my shitty "touge"/autox experience really ruined my turn-in when I transitioned to track racing, I basically relied on my springs alone to rotate the car, and had to break a hard habit of turning in too hard/too fast that I was unsettling the car.

Everything needs to be slow/smooth, and that's when your "softer" suspension will train you to be a better driver.

Yeah if I did it again I'd go Bilstein. Get those. Roads in tacoma are 72% beyond repair (so they don't try til there's funds to replace) and even yellows valved for my shocks bent rims on hr sport springs and 55 profile 195s

Edit: treadwear is manufacturer dependent, and Pirelli makes some really soft stuff that skews their rating. My p4s handled freaking solid for as radials.

So you would say the SRT.Ts are good for a heavier car and the B6s would be better for a lighter car? I ask because my CRX is a lot heavier than you are likely expecting. I weight 320lbs right now and carry a full toolbox, jack, jackstand, and 12v airpump on the passenger side.

Right now I am leaning towards the ~$75 SRT.Ts over the ~$120 B6s just for cost reasons, but neither are out of the question. Why do you recommend the Bilsteins?

The P4 4S+ grip fine for AS radials that are supposed to last 90k+ miles, and they actually seem to grip better now than when new, but they are not in the same range as a performance summer tire.

I don't understand all this talk about buying expensive struts and springs when OP stated he can't afford $500.

For thread relevancy, I saw beer mention Tokico and personally I think they are absolute trash. Economy would be stock springs and the cheapest struts you can find, which OP posted a list of already.
