Default Alpine CDE-HD149BT

So I wanted a Bluetooth compatible head unit in my 89 Si, but I wanted to remain single din. I didn't feel like hacking up the center of my dash and I wanted a balance of decent features as I drive alot, without adding a bunch of extra weight. I researched for a month or so different single din head units, and there are several great options, but I went with the Alpine because it is compatible with Pandora on Android phones, including tagging, track titles and all other app functions. It also works especially great with iPods or iPhones, so if I decide to sell it I have both markets to sell to. It also is compatible with Alpine's TuneIt App. Got the unit installed a while ago but figured it would be a good product for a review here on DSO.

Alpine CDE-HD149BT

Box Contents:
Head unit and dash sleeve
Faceplate case for removeable faceplate
Wiring harness
Bluetooth microphone
USB extension
Doesn't include remote, but a factory Alpine remote is around $20 online

The unit is very well made, you can tell when you take it out of the box. Installation was as straightforward as any other head unit, with the exception of the microphone for hands free calling, which I ran up the A pillar, across the headliner, and clipped to the headliner behind the rearview mirror. I originally tried it by the A pillar but road noise was coming through on my calls, moving it behind the mirror solved it. It's got a ton of different settings for display, including a green illumination that matches closely most Hondas. The buttons are well laid out and easy to navigate. One of the big bonuses of the unit is the TuneIt app from Alpine, which you can get in the PlayStore for Android or AppStore for iPhones. The app allows you to sit in the vehicle and tune the unit using your smartphone instead of navigating menus on the unit. You can save multiple setting profiles, and there is a library of user profiles you can download, based on system type, car make and model, etc. Works nice and makes tuning super easy. The unit has a USB extension it comes with, in my case I just use it for charging my phone but you can plug in an iPod or iPhone connector. It has an aux input also, and 3 sets of 4 volt preouts to run external amps. Parametric equalizer, MediaXpander, and subwoofer phase correction, as well as time correction. SiriusXM and HD radio compatibility. 24 bit digital audio converter, and the sound on this thing is excellent, and really was an improvement to my system with everything else remaining the same. The internal amp is only rated at 18w RMS, although many times head unit manufactures exaggerate this number, Alpine is known to rate them true to what they actually put out. If using external amps, there is a setting to turn the internal amp off, which is nice. Bluetooth is A2DP compatible. Hands free calling works well, and you can scroll through your phone book or recent/missed calls easily. All in all this is a great unit for the price. I bought mine from SonicElectronix for $229 as a refurbished model with warranty, free shipping, and used a coupon code for $10 off. I'm real happy with the purchase, I forgot how nice Alpine head units are to be honest.

Here's a picture and a link to the specs.

I've always loved alpine head units! I've had three or four different ones, due to new cars, theft, etc. never from one going bad tho!
