Hey guys. I was referred by a friend to use this forum for my questions.

I'll be first to admit that I'm not really a "car guy" since I've spent most of my time tinkering with motorcycles. So if something I say sounds dumb or what have you, my bad.

I've had a few friends pester me into getting a project car, so I've saved the money necessary to do one. They've all got VW's and Subaru's which I have no interest in doing (they're constantly failing) and I'm probably most convinced in getting a d-series, which my current car (2001 Civic LX 5spd) has. Based on the reading I've been doing, the d16's are pretty good to build for pretty cheap, but I would prefer to get some real opinions based on the situation I'm in. Any suggestions help. Also, if it makes a difference, I'm located in Canada.

B20 Block
B16A or B16B VTEC head
GSR or ITR Trans

If you want to keep the D16 there is more than enough info on different combos and builds on this site

What are your power goals?

Are you looking for a dependable DD or just a weekend warrior ?

And most importantly budget?

I don't want anything outrageous to begin with, maybe 200-250hp? Depends on how much power I'm starting with, I guess. I'm looking for something that can be reliable if I choose to daily drive it (which I probably won't be for a while, I have no interest in selling that civic at the moment). Not including the purchase of the car, I'd probably have a budget between 3-5K.

I've been doing some brief searching on the local classified sites and I've started taking an interest in Acura 1.6EL's. They're pretty cheap where I live, they're pretty light, and I think they have the engine I'm going to want (d16y8, right?). What do you think about one of those?

Not partial to the d16, just seems like the cheapest way to get reliable power. Also, keep in mind that the 3-5k is in Canadian dollars. I can up the budget if that gets me nowhere, but I figured that would be a good starting point.

Not going to hit 200-250 with a D16 and 3-5K in US or Canadian currency.
Not if you plan to DD it you wont with that budget and engine you might pull 175hp reliably

Yes you can boost it but with that budget I doubt you do it reliably.

Okay, even that's tolerable. I'm not looking to build the fastest car in the world, though I'll admit I was looking to make at least 200hp. Not a big deal, I guess weight reduction will be the first step. I'll do some more reading so I don't ask annoying questions, and I'll probably move to a different thread. Thanks for your help.

Not much you can remove in a civic for weight reduction.
You could remove every seat and leave just the driver seat remove the carpet and the door panels. After all of that you might have pull 80-100 lbs just not worth the time and effort then the car would be far to uncomfortable to drive any real distance.

Glass is about the only thing of weight that can easily be removed (Still isn't much) from a civic but then you run into legality issue of it being on the road.
