Default Some info

Ok, finally got around navigating the forum and found "Noob", not picking up on the spelling, "got it" now...

As stated breifely on my first post, this 1989 Honda 5 spd, 4 door, twin carby was an unexpected "adoption" into my collection of "cars I don't really want but are there due to unexplained circumstances" !
All legal and all cars in my name, all cars passed inspection/s.

I have had HEAPS and HEAPS of cars, too many to list, too many are now a collectors dream-wish-I-still-had-them, type of thing.

I'm trying to become content with just 1 car.
But I need 1 car to drive, the other car incase the daily car breaks down, fix the car not being driven so it is on a "ready-to-go" status, but gets started every so often just to keep the fluids circulating, while hanging up the clothes on the clothes line...yes, a sytem of all things.
And I have a 1985 Toyota Hiace, that to was a given or scrap it, so I saved it. Sort of a work van, just incase. That needed a motor and it runs a charm, rusting away with a fresh coat of paint. I collect scrap metal, bottles, etc etc and when enough at the end of the year, the van gets registered for 3 months to sell everything, so it pays for itself. Last repair work I did on the van was install a push-button starter switch, cos the key-start became tempremental. $15.00 for push button switch, and wires frm my scrap collection fixed the problem.

The Honda, how did that come to be ??

My dad needed a new front electric gate, and the dude that makes the fences and gates, in his yard he has his "collections" of dying, dead or one-of-these-days will fix these cars n trucks.

Amongst the items was this Honda, I asked about it and he wanted to sell it, was not interested at the time.
3 years later we had to go back there and the Honda was still in the same spot. So I asked out of curiosity, "what's with the Honda" ?
He said he was about to clean up the yard and the Honda is going to scap along with everything else. OR, I can have it, just pay the towing fee.

I asked what was wrong with it, he said nothing, it still goes, just a few dents, and no keys.

"Not a problem", I said, "I'll take it", ( as usual )

Got it home, battery, fuel and it started but missing on No 3 cylinder.

New spark plugs and it ran nicely.

Has after market wood sports steering wheel, horn was not working, checked it, it was never wired up, easy fix.

Pioneer Stereo/radio is missing the head part, previous sub woofer taken out, fixed key issue at locksmith, and ready to go get registered.
Oils, filter etc etc, and a under-body steam clean.
That's when I discovered who ever drove it once before obviously thrashed it, hit some bumbs, the chassis shows obvious sign of bottoming out.

Already had 4 new tyres, ( no spare, now sorted ).
All breaks recently replaced, but needs 2 new front rotors as it shows they were down to the metal.
In a nutshell, a negelected car by previous owner/driver.

When registered, it drove like I never want to stop driving this car.
On the outside it looks like a "box" of a car, but driving it feels like something else. It hugs the road nicely. Drive straight and has the power I need as a standard vehicle, I was content this car can become my new daily.
Superseding my current daily, Ford festiva 1.5L.
There is no comparison. The Honda is far far superior in many ways, for the same size engines, this surprised me.

After a long trip in the country with the Honda, up in the hills, around the corners, along the straights, this car ticked many boxes, for me.

Car now was 3 weeks into it's "new life", the day after that long trip, ( not missing a beat ) I had an eerand to do and needed to fill with fuel, come back home and get ready a few hours later.

Now, this is where I think things started to go wrong.

When I re-fueld that morning, the day after the long trip, I thought, "try ethanol fuel" !!
Was this a mistake ?
Also, I topped the tank right up full.
My driveway is a downhill slope.

When I went to start the car, it felt was as if the battery had gone flat, or something felt like the the compression was not alowing it to kick over, it just would not kick over, yet was trying. The new battery was not flat.
My first thought was to remove the spark plugs, turn the engine over cos it may have flooded ?
But I was then in a hurry to get on with the rest of the day.
So, I kept trying to start it, it did, but it started to clang clang clang !

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF &**%%

lol

Or was it the Ethanol fuel ?

It drove for another 2 weeks with this clanging noise, knowing very well indeed I have just ruined the motor. I've blown it, stupid stupid stupid.
I can get a motor for $200.00 provided I take out myself, this I did. So I now had a spare motor from another Honda 1991 twin carb.

The very next day after I got that "new" spare motor, the clanging motor finally blew up, literally.

I saw bits and pieces from rear view mirror, it kept going, oil everywhere on the road, noise getting worse and worse, another big bang-clank-clank, it stopped, I was just 200 yards from home and I did not really want to push the car, or tow it.
It started again, clanging away, oil, water and metal everywhere along the road still, it got me home into the shed. Oil all along the driveway.

Lucky, did not have to push or tow the car.

Upon inspection, No 3 rod snapped, smashing both sides of the block.

Ironically, it was also No 3 cylinder that was missing when first started and went ok with new plugs.

So I am not sure what caused it, speculate all we can, but that's the story.

The other motor is currently going throgh a re-build with new O-size pistons etc, on-going...>

Mmm... In Australia we have ethanol blended shitty fuel called E10 (up to 10% ethanol blend) usually has like a 91 octane (which is not comparable to US fuel specs), my guess is that it would be this which the car will run on fine, I find if i run this the car pings under load which it doesn't on the higher octane fuels.

E85 bowsers are hard to come by so it seems unlikely you would've filled up with that. However, if you had i reckon it would've just not run well / at all.

Any pics of your sedan?

Yeah, it has 10% ethanol, thought I give it a go. But the question is, did this make the engine lock up when tried starting it 2 hours later.
Or was it the downhill slope of the driveway, filling up a cylinder with fuel ?
Twin carbs are on the firewall side of the engine. If sloping down-forward, did fuel run in on a open inlet valve ?

yeah, it's E10
But did not run soon after first fill, it started to clang, so could no hear any pings.
As mentioned on post, it eventually f'd up.

E10 wont kill your motor, if anything it wears out the rubber lines over time (years of continual use).

It seems more possible that the carbs leaked into the motor, but I can't remember ever hearing that happen with these dual carby setups.

Can you attach the fuel feed line to the intake manifold and see if it's leaking?

That's some crazy carnage!

Motor is out of car now and rebuilding a fresh one. But sure when it's all back together it will be checked.
In fact I now have 2 sets of twin carbs, the original and the other motor I bought, it all came complete. It's from a wrecking yard where you go there and take out parts yourself, saves costs. But, the downside is, you cannot start anything to check motors.
It's a lottery. It was hard to find a twin carby motor, at $200.00 complete with everything, including starter, flywheel, dizzy and fuel pump. After 3 months, the cars that come in get recycled, they don't care what car it is, rare or not, it just goes to the crusher.

Usually they sell these sperately or don't include them.
The other wreckers charge alot more, but they employ people to remove stuff.

The story with the donor-motor is, I was going to take the head off anyway, clean it up, rings bearings, measure bore, hopefully hone and rings. When we checked the bore it was out of tolerances, so I though what the f, just recon it.
Got the head to do next after the block is sorted.
Paid an extra 100 for the gearbox.

I'm now researching what to buy as in complete gasket kit, do I go after market, if so what brand ? Or do I go original Honda ?

So far, on Ebay, the USA sellers also include complete set of new head bolts with gasket kit.
In Ebay Australia only the gaskets.

So that brings another question, do I use the same head bolts ?

One more question, the radiator hoses and a few more hoses, is that a hose kit to look for ?

Other than that I'll just plot along, there is no urgency, but my dad want the job done so he can resume painting the lounge room and get his coffee table back !

Have got a shed and tools, but decided to do the re-build motor indoors away from harmfull dust and what not.

E10 is the garbage we have here. You can no longer get ethanol free fuel at a standard gas station in CA and probably the whole US.

Wyoming has Ethanol free Gas. Use it in my lawnmower and most recently my 1991 civic DX.

A co-worker of mine was just out in Minnesota and says it is available out there too.

I'd go ARP for the head studs and OEM for the head gasket. But you could probably source a new HG from supercheapauto/repco. They should be able to sort you out for radiator hoses too.

We have ethanol free gas here in Minnesota, it is sold as non-oxygenated fuel for collector vehicles.

You link all the grounds, then wire each solenoid into the spark plug wires, that way they hit sequentially as the engine fires. This creates what I like to call asphalt shattering VTEC.
