Default D16Y8 Stock... Tune?

Greetings, forum noob here. I did a search for D16Y8, found nothing on this.

I own a Stock 1998 Acura 1.6 EL Premium with an automatic transmission, an awesome car. I have owned it for over 4 years. I love it even though it is utterly gutless. My lust for more power has led me to discover that my D16Y8 engine will probably never give me the power I'd like but after 100k trouble free kilometers (it now has 250k, 155k miles) and it is fully loaded, I think I may keep it. With major servicing coming up, (timing belt due at 268k km) I am curious as to what can be done to this car to make it more fun.

While I have not ruled out I/C/E and other mods, I doubt they are worth the money.

To the point: What would just a good ECU tune net me? Any improvement to shift points, fuel economy or anything else?

Thanks for any responses.

I would do auto to manual Tranny swap first.

Interesting.

Also sounds expensive.

I'd prefer to keep the automatic though as I do a fair amount of stop and go commuting and I have yet to drive stick. Although I suppose that would fix my shift point problem.

Thanks though.

Other than simple long tube CAI, and maybe 2.25"/60mm exhaust, no much you can do to it with ease.

With conversion to OBD-1 ECU you would be able to put a small turbo on it to gain some power around 2500-5000 and not overly tax the slushbox.

For stop and go traffic, a slushbox (automatic) is perfect. I was a courier for 80k-100k miles a year, 130k-160k clics a year.

I would add a small trans cooler if you do the turbo route.

What is your shift point issue? WOT shiftpoints are preset inside the transmisson on the few I've played with.

The slush box shifts 1k rpm below redline at WOT.

thread title is misleading
You want a stock tune for a d16y8 but yet you want to add stuff to make more power?

First if you want power your need to go to the big stuff. Turbo, supercharger, NA build.

if you simply get bolt on and a tune you wont net much power.
I believe there was a 99 d16y8 civic that was dyno tune with bolt ons and it made something like 115whp to 120whp. Was in one of the tuner mags

So its really about how much power are you trying to get?
Your have to pay to play

convert to obd1, find tuner, ask what they prefer to tune on, but said hardware, take to them to tune. /thread

The small power increase you'll get my tuning will be so unnoticable with an automatic. The only thing that will be noticeable is a decrease in driveability.

Keep it stock, or go all out.

Yea all 100% stock will obly net you a few hp.
Your be better off keeping your fuel tank on half then tuning a 100% stock motor.
And the auto trans is a big killer on power. Its not even the shift points bit the gearing and lag the auto has

Thanks for the replies.

I was hoping something could be done with this car since it is coming due for some major servicing (timing belt, brakes, tires and probably more I can't think of) and I was wondering if I should get the work done and soup it up a bit to keep it, but for that coin I can easily get something 10 years newer and far more fun.

Either way this baby will get me through the winter.
