Thumbs up New '88 STD Hatchback

Hey D-Series!

I am new to this site, but not necessarily new to Hondas in general. I have owned several Integras, RSX & various swapped hatchbacks over the years, but never a single cam motor before. So I am here to learn more about my '88 hatchback that I recently picked up.

I had been out of the Honda scene for a while, but I had to "come back" when I came across this all original, never modified STD model w/ 4speed gearbox and only 125k miles. No rust, never left the desert. So while the paint was fading, the body was straight as an arrow and the interior was mint... I'm not exaggerating, the vents all work and there is not even any wear or tear on the seats... formerly belonged to a little old lady. Since I am used to seeing most surviving EF's as hollowed out shells with lots of damage and/or pieces missing, I couldn't believe it when I first saw it and literally couldn't pass it up.

It had been sitting dead with no wheels for a few years, but all it took was a new battery, plugs, wires, and fluids to fire right up! I also had the gas tank cleaned and refinished as a precaution, because I had no idea how long it sat for. Next, I found a set of BMW bottlecaps on craigslist and repainted them to get rolling.

Sadly, that was about six months ago, and all of a sudden I've got some motor issues. It died on me and now won't turn over anymore. So here I am to try and figure out the next step in my build. I am not sure what direction I want to go in at this point. Part of me wants to diagnose the problem and stick with the "all original" setup. The other part of me wants to start fresh with a new long block and build it up for a tiny turbo build. I was thinking that I should take this as a sign from above and at least swap it over to MPFI or something... 72hp and these long gears didn't exactly make for the most exciting time behind the wheel.

This is a car that I would like to develop for cone racing and focus primarily on suspension modifications for the twists rather than going all out for straight-line performance. I am looking forward to checking out everybody's build threads on the site and welcome any feedback and suggestions as to what I should do with mine.

Nice buy, if you need any help converting to mpfi, or diagnosing the original motor, make sure to search, but I know we'll help if you make an effort. Welcome to DSO.

Depending on what class you build the car for, if your goal is dodging cones, get a Quaife quick-ratio steering rack!

Looks good, trace down your wiring issues before you take it apart. At least diagnose it in the car, then isolate fix and then modify.
