Default Front Wheel Drive Street Mod Class - Who here would be interested?

I was talking to one of the only National Level Street Mod autocrossers to be somewhat competitive with a civic last night and told him that I wished there was a seperate street mod class for front wheel drive vehicles.
He does have some good connections at SCCA and he told me that this class has already been discussed but never moved forward because there were questions about whether it was popular enough to justify a national class.
That said, what do people here think about getting a seperate FWD Street Mod class?

Would having such a class increase you odds of going to autocrosses on a regular?

I personnally love autocross, and believe that my car is a great all around street car, but since it's turbocharged, it gets classed with modded Awd and Rwd cars that can put down a lot more power. I know that I will never win a SM event with my turbo D16 and don't think anyone would be able to do so with a dual purpose street/race car.

I think a FWD Street Mod class would allow many younger/more budget oriented drivers to compete with their modified daily drivers without constantly getting killed by cars worth 10X more than theirs.

I think if the response is positive here, I'll try to post on the Sccaforums and see what others think there...

I think considering Auto-x is more for fun then no I do not agree.

My question, why would you want to keep watering down the classes till "everyone" is on the same keel?

I'm not sure about that... Right now, any civic driver with a turbo or a swap is classed in SM... That pretty much screws all of us who like street civics with more than 125 hp (99-00si not included)...

If you're not boosted or swapped, you can be in the ST and SP classes...

FWD SM would probably be a great place for Turbo-D and B Swap rivalry...
THe fastest cars in the class will likely be high dollar N/A ITR or K powered hatches... but I also think that people with Cheap HMT setups would be able to have more competive/fun class racing against similar cars... This class would also suit modded neons, mazda 3, sentra, focus, cobalt... basically the 16-30year old enthusiast class.

yes i do like the idea. because many cars can fit into this class. like you said neons, mazda's, cavaliers, cobalts, escorts, vw's, etc.

so yes id say get on it if possible. and i wouldnt say this would water down the class because every fwd car has the potential to get it done. unlike a high dollar rx-7TT or a nasty built e36 m3 that just screws even an e30 m3 for that matter. what ever you do as well as driver those fwd cars mentioned wont keep up.

I think FWD is the only reasonable way SM could be broken up. It's already a "catch-all" for street cars with unlimited drivetrain modification.

The current SM rules are basically unlimited drivetrain / suspension, full interior (except backseat), must retain heater, etc. And then there is a minimum weight depending on displacement, correct?

When you allow "unlimited" anything, it gives advantage with the people with "unlimited" buying potential. People with Hondas typically don't fall in that socio-economic category.

there is a class for FWD and they do dominate...

thats sts2 and sts.........

Yeah, but sts and sts2 don't allow swaps or turbo. All of the more dedicated honda fans have one or the other because 70 (cx) to 127 (EX/SI) hp on the street isn't much fun.

even if you "water" down classes so that you can make a SM FWD class....

its still comes down to 2 things... youll always get beat by the better driver... and usually the better driver has more $$$ so you can count on them to always have the fastest and freshest tires ... etc etc etc

You can run a bolt on Z6 in DSP in any 92-95 chassis, or a bolt on Y8 in any 96-00 chassis.

DSP even gives you unlimited intake manifolds. ITBs, whatever. Just no compression, cam or headwork.

yaaa but dsp is bmw territory.... and i rather run an integra 95 rs with the type r motor if im gonan stick to fwd in dsp

y8 96-00 has no chance in CSP

FSP 96-00 hatch in the other hand has a chance, actually its a proven winner with out going all out (no LSD!)
also with fsp 92-95 d15 civics

Hrm. Hadn't thought about Teg chassis in DSP. You trade about 400 lbs for 50-60 whp going to Integra RS / Type R over Civic CX / Z6. Not to mention the better ITR gearing.
