Default Downpipe welding question

Had to cut it to clear my ac compressor . Wondering when I weld it back up do the mating surfaces of the pipe need to be completley flush ? Or could i weld it air tightClick image for larger version

just make it so there is little to no air gap at the to be weld joint...

what do you want? just weld the thing to the thing!

Well what i want is the bottom corner of the flange side pipe to go inside the other pipe. But dont know if that way would make a good enough seal for that spot will be getting a little hot right there..

I guess its called a butt joint that i was wondering if i hsd to do but best way is lap joint and or sleeve
