Default D16Z6 TD04-15T Ignition tuning

Curious about anyone's experience with D16 turbo setups and timing.

I'm running:
D16Z6 /w PR4 rods and JE wrist pins
ARP headstuds
9.2:1 CR

TD04HL-15t turbo (essentially a 15g with a larger hotside)
FMIC
RDX 410cc injectors

I pulled 1.5deg per psi to make my basemap. My AFR's are 13.5 in vac/boost transition 12.5 in low boost and 12 by 5psi. Currently running wg pressure of about 6psi, eventually turning it up to 10psi which should get me into the 200-220hp range. Per some of the postings here I made a more aggressive timing map and wanted some feedback before I run it. I've got a solid det-can setup and will use it with this map but to me this seems like a lot of timing for a turbo d. Thoughts?

Interested to see some comments.
I'm a newb but ill say take it slow and watch the a/f ratio and not the road.

It's not one of the greddy 15g's it's off of an 03 saab 9-3 viggen. The hl td04 housing should allow for a bit more top end over the greddy.

I've now run this ignition map with good results. Thought I heard some detonation in the top end of the map and pulled a degree or so.

Your y8 setup will require significantly less timing than my setup because of its more efficient combustion chamber.

Was really hoping to get some input from someone who's tuned a similar setup. Good luck though!!

Nice. My buddy had s Saab 9-3 black convertible. I'm about to tune mine hopefully. Did the det sound like sizzling bacon? Lol.
What's your set can setup like? Brass pipe and rubber hose? Where do u have it bolted to?
How do the plugs look?
Did u make the basemap yourself ?

I only pulled .75 degrees per pound of boost on my build, way back when.
That was on a stock z6 with a TD04L-13T off a WRX, what ever wastegate is on them, 8 psi ish.
After I rebuilt the motor with vitaras, I used the same map, just adjusted the fuel, and cranked the boost.

The stock P28 base map is about your best option to start with.

Thank you! I too started with a stock p28 map and pulled 1.5deg/ psi to get my afrs close.

I'm using a product called 'lilknockmeter' and a piezo knock sensor. It has a headphone jack as well a display for knock count.
What were you using for knock sensing?

It's my understanding that the td04hl is the largest of the td04 hot sides. The 15t wheel is essentially a 15g with clipped blades. At 6psi the car rips all the way to 7k without much if any fall off.

I'll eventually have this car on the dyno and will post my results.

Spark plugs. I wasn't reading them for knocking though. If your that far your already fucked.

Fair point on the plugs. I'll do a 3rd gear WOT pull, pull plugs, and post a pic at some point here. Things sound find though. Time for more boost!

Can you post a larger resolution photo of your ignition map ? I cannot make out anything from your current photo. I don't have my laptop near by but IIRC I have 17 deg peak ignition on my stock d15b with a 13t td04HL at 8.5 psi

Here's a link to some better images

Looks like 18.75deg by 10psi. I'm currently running 5psi on this map and haven't heard any knock. I'd be curious to see what your map looks like. Whats your setup? How much boost?

I ran about 19 degrees max on my TD04H-15G setup on a full z6 stock block with no issues, but I also had 93 octane gas.

what you run will depend most on your local gas availability

also that TD04 map is missing the biggest 04 housing, the TE04 off of turbododges
Exducer / cm2
Greddy 15G, 19T TD04H 44 30.41
Saab wheel TD04HL 45.6 32.66
Turbododge wheel TE04H 47.752 35.81

That's really great to know! Here in Oregon we get 92. I'll pull a degree and see how it does. I will say that the more aggressive ramp in timing up to 5psi made a big difference.

If there's interest I'm happy to post fuel maps as well.

What compressor is that TE04 mated to? That's a huge turbine.

a trash compressor, the 13C. it uses a unique turbododge bolt pattern

about all you could do with it is use the turbine wheel itself and have the greddy/saab housing machined to fit it

I’ve always been hesitant to trust any digital knock sensing device. I’m sure some of them work OK but with a mechanical det can and the human ear, there’s no mistaking it, especially when you know exactly what your specific engine sounds like.

I’m sure the last thing you want to do is spend more money to build a mechanical det can but I would recommend it to verify what that box is telling ya

I agree on the det can. The knock meter I'm using has a headphone jack that allows me to listen to the piezo sensor on the block. I've never had a better listening device on a motor. I also don't trust the meter, but keep it there so I can listen.

Still haven't had a chance to wire in my boost control solenoid so this tune is still unproven past 6psi.
