Iíve searched many of forums, but couldnít find an exact answer. Iím going to boost my D16Y8 in a year or so. Because I donít have the funds right now, my plan is to ďcollectĒ the parts I need for the boost project over the next year and install some of the parts as I get them, but only if I can use them without hurting my current setup (basic I/H/E). For my first purchase I was thinking of an ECU, maybe a P28 or the P06 with an OBD2B to OBD1 harness. Kenji211.com is recommended over at Honda-tech as a place to purchase them from.

So my question is, can I use one of these ECUís in my current setup, just plug it in and go? Will I be hurting my performance with one of these ECUís with the current setup? Is it recommended to have a custom VTEC engagement or just leave it? Obviously in the beginning I would like to ďcollectĒ parts that I could use now. Iím open to suggestions.

Yes, you would... The P28's fuel and ignition maps are a LOT different... There was a thread not too long ago about this... Here it is Read that and it should answer your ??'s.

Edit: You would have the complete opposite problem...

it will run... most likely with a cel... but i wouldnt run it too long as is. I would get it tuned to meet your needs at the time if you wanna do it. If you dont have the time/money for tuning, do the ecu as one of the last things when you are getting your setup finalized.

No he is right. He has it chipped and will load a y8 basemap on there for you instead of the p28 basemap. This will be a pretty good tune but your other variables that you add will alter the tune over time and it will need to be retuned.

Alright, I'm learning. So if he loads a y8 basemap onto a P28 will it in way hurt the performance or more important to me my reliability in being a daily driver? Will I gain anything in putting a P28 in now? I'm kind feeling that maybe I should spend the few hundred in something else, is that correct? If so what?

The only way that putting in the p28 now is if you have other mods that could benefit from tuning and you have the programs and whatnot to be able to tune and burn your own chip. I personally would wait to get the whole turbo kit pieced together and on and then throw the p28 on and get it tuned when you have all the parts you are gonna use on there. Otherwise you will just have to be retuning all the time.

00kickercivic,

I understand what your saying about installing a P28 ECU in now. There would be no point in doing it at this time if i'm looking for any gains. If I did I would have to retune it each time I add a new piece to get anything out of it. Looks like I will be collecting parts.

Let me throw this out there. If I go ahead and install the P28 with a y8 base map and I'm not expecting any gains would that be alright? I would just have it ready to go for the turbo.

yes... if it has a y8 basemap... it should run the same as your y8 ecu that is in there right now

nah... It might be a little loud, loose a little torque, but that is all... Unless you want 250WHP, 2.5 is cool.

i was also running the p28 on a mini me swap but the 4800 vtec engagement loss power compared to setting it above 5k rpm. also i was wasting a lot of gas when it was set at the stock 4800.

So, keep it at stock 5500 RPM (I have a '00 EX), or lower it to 5000 RPM?

Keep it stock 5500 RPMs... lowering the vtec won't do any good on a stock motor... the only time you should change the vtec at all is if you've done something drastic to modify the performance characteristics of your motor.

don't drop it down even an extra 500 RPM huh? It's sucks that VTEC is so late on the Y8 5500 RPM. Redline is only at 7000 RPM. I get to only enjoy the wonders of VTEC for only 1500 RPM!

John at http://phearable.net doesn't recommend that I get the ECU until i'm ready. That sucks.
