Default P2p ecu Q

Im doing a mini-me on my 98 DX. I picked up the P2p ecu to run it but now im reading that my car is obd2a and the ECU i have on the way may be
obd2b or vice versa. Can I rewire my car for the different ECU or is it pointless? How many wires would I end up changing?

yours is obd 2a same as mine , ill sell you my pba ecu (its off a 97 acura 1.6 el)

its the same as "si" ecu, i wont need it soon cause i ordered my conversion harness so ill need a p-28

the p2p should be obd2a the p2j is obd2b right?

either way you'll have trouble using that ECU as your block doesn't have a place for the required knock sensor.

go OBD1, it is always the right answer

EDIT: I think, it MAY be the USDM SI ecu, also... lol

That's not true.
I just finished a mini-me a few months ago and the place for the knock sensor is there... taped and everything.
All I had to do was screw it in and wire it to the ECU.

My car:
1997 Civic DX (D16Y7-same engine as all 96-98 CX, DX, and LX)
D16Y7 (1997) engine block
D16Y8 (1996) everything else

I've never heard of P2j, but that's not what tells you if it's an auto or manual.

As far as telling what ECU you have by looking at the code
For example:
37820-P2P-A31

37820 - is usually the same for all Hondas, no matter what year or model it is.
P2P – tells you what engine it goes with (in this case it’s D16Y8 )
A31 – tells you what trammission it goes with (this one is manual; any number above 50 is auto)

These are some of the ECU’s I’ve researched (I had a longer list, but can’t find it now):

Got the ECU today....its a P2p-a12... according to the table you posted my car is:

37820-P2E-L02 LG 901-200297 96-98 Honda Civic DX 2 (5-speed)

Your car is a DX, came with a P2E (non-vtec OBD2 manual) ECU

The ecu you got is a P2P (Vtec OBD2 manual) ECU

Clear anything up as far as the chart?

Obviously I need to add like 3 wires for vtec but again thats not what im asking...According to D16rice the ECU should work fine. This is quoted from D16rice:

Ok, if you're still not sure if you have OBD-II a or b, here is an easy way to check it.
Pretend that you are looking at your ECU
The side that plugs into the wire harness is sectioned into 4 parts (A,B,C,D)

|-------|--------|--------|-----|
|....A....|.....B.....|.....C....|..D...|
|-------|--------|--------|-----|

OBD2a (manual transmission) ECU's use only A, C, and D.
B is empty. This is where transmission would plug in for Auto.

OBD2b (manual transmission) ECU's use only A, B, and C.
D is empty. This is where transmission would plug in for auto.

Your car is OBD2a because all 1996-1998 civics are OBD2a (from the factory).
If you have OBD2b ECU, you are better off selling it and getting the right one instead of using a conversion harness to go OBD2b.

P.S.
You should only do this AFTER you do the mini-me swap, not before.

According to what your saying....the ecu is OBD-2b...because the D spot is not used...but on the side of the ECU it says...P2pA12?

Using the chart you posted it would fall under:
37820-P2P-A34 UP 921-322852 96-98 Honda Civic EX 2 5-speed

The 2 contradict each other :sadface:

A12 is the transmission code, it has nothing to do with it being a or b

Oh, I see where you're getting confused... the chart only goes up to 1998.
That's because I did it a long time ago; it shold actually go as follows
37820-P2P-A34 UP 921-322852 96-00 Honda Civic EX 2 5-speed
I'll edit the chart in a few minutes.
The way you decide if it's obd2 a or b is by where the plugs are located.
