Default Just another VAFC question...

I know that this has most likely been asked before but I have a different motive for asking the question. I live in an area that requires Emissions Testing once a year:cussing: I am currently setting up a 11.0-11.5:1 CR Y8 motor to drop into my 2000 Coupe EX. I was woundering how far I can realy go with tuning using a VAFC? I know that its only a piggy back but I am stuck with using such a device. I cannot go with a Chipped P28 due to the State enforced Testing. This is also what has stopped me from boosting my ride. Will I be able to tune my setup within reason? If not what are my options.

you should be fine running 91-93 octane and a VAFC. Just won't make quite as much as if you had timing control.

There are a lot of options available to you, not just VAFC.... What state do you live in?? Anything besides Cali, and all you have to do is pass the readyness and CEL tests.

I would just boost it. The Greddy and Edelbrock kits both pass the tests...

I know that boosting with those kits will get me through E-Check but they both are out of my price range. I have finaly settled on going N/A. I have to keep it as my daily driver.

I am assuming with running such a high CR I will have to retard my ignition a bit but other than that I should be able to tune my A/F with a wideband. Then after all of that is set up I should want to take it to a dyno for the final squeze out of what I have. Does this sound about right?

sounds like you are headed in the right direction. I can see where you are coming from for reliability but the cost for both applications (greddy kit vs NA) is gonna be fairly close after tuning. The greddy kit will pass running the Emanage and will still be fairly reliable if you mileage is low. Otherwise I would build your engine, run a FPR on the rich side or tune your VAFC on the rich side until you get to a dyno. Timing should be a little retarded but shouldn't be much trouble with 91-93. You may also consider running a colder plug until you can get it tuned by a shop that can better monitor your engine.

Well I thank you very much for your input. I think that I will pick up a vafc more twards the end of my build. I know that I will not be able to get a quality tune out of simply playing with my fpr. Its all a start though.
