Default Sea Foam Engine Treatment

My mechanic reccomended the I run a bottle of Sea Foam Multi Use Engine Treatment in my intake through my vacume hose. I did that and it seems to be helping. I wanted to use another bottle, but at 7 bucks a pop, is there another brand i can use that is cheaper but works the same?

Also I have another question. I am getting a check engine code 12 which is the EGR. Is there a way to check if my EGR is bad, or if it is from something else wrong like a sensor. My radiator leaks, could that cause it or is that just for carb engines? thanks guys.

I heard that if you have more than 100,000 on your motor, you shouldn't use it cause it'll cause leaks due to the sea form cleaning out the sludges and shit. I dont think it'll cause your radiator to leak though. I only have 1/3 of the whole bottle through the vacuum hose. some put it in their gas tank and crankcase. about the EGR, I have no idea. sorry.

yeah, ive had that light comming on for a while, but only recently found out what it meant. The radiator leak was also there befor the treatment. He told me to use it because the engine was sluggish and hesitating on acceleration. I mentioned the leak because i thought that could be causing the cel.

ok, after using the seafoam, did you remove your spark plugs? some people report that they foul up from the sea foam.

I would suggest changing the plugs and oil afterwards.

changing the oil would only be reccommended if it's time or if you put some seafoam into the crankcase oil.

EGR has nothing to do with coolant. Usually if the CEL for EGR is on, it's because the EGR is stuck shut and is not functioning. In truth, you don't need the EGR...all it does is recirculate some exhaust through the intake ...but you won't be able to 'disable' it easily, so you need to get a new valve off eBay most likely.

RAdiator leaking coolant is a serious problem, so fix that before you wind up with low coolant and a toasted motor...cost you like $100 on eBay for a new radiator, and it's VERY easy to change out yourself. Nothing worse than an overheating motor to ruin your month.

testing egr, hold pedal steady around 2k to 3k rpm and see if idle fluctuates! That's how I check them on my s-10! works IMO!

Also I don't know if they are similar but my s-10 had problems with pluggin up the egr ports! just something to check!

is this sea foam good to run thru a engine (f22a6) w/ 190k miles but its really bad accel. and terrible mileage.

Plugged EGR ports probably the culprit. You drive an HX I assume? I am not real familiar with the HX but EGR I am. To see if your ports are clogged, you need to use either a vacuum pump or voltage source depending on what type of EGR valve you have. If it has a vacuum nipple on top of the valve then with the engine idling, use a Mity-Vac vacuum pump or something similar to pull the valve open. If the engine dies or starts to run super rough, then the ports are not clogged. Your problem is either too little exhaust backpressure (probably not) or a solenoid that would allow vacuum to the valve. If the EGR valve is electric controlled, then you would need to supply some voltage to the EGR valve with the EGR connector unplugged. You need to pull the connector or the voltage could travel back to the ECU and send you up Schitt Creek. Same deal with the electric style, if the engine dies when voltage is applied to the valve, the ports are good and your problem is elsewhere. Hope that helps.

ok guys i work at a lube center and DO NOT put Sea Foam Engine Treatment in your civic .and yes you do not want to put it in any car over 100k.but for civic's it will never stop smoking 98% of the time we have about 20 people with hondas come back about a week later and tell us its still smoking

I had 100k on mine when I did it. it never smoked once. but it did a good job breaking up the oil deposits in the block.

Any time u run a cleaner or detergent thru your intake/vaccum.... you HAVE to replace your plugs, at the minimum take them to a wire-wheel to clean the baked-on sludge that forms on them.

Just remember:

Any time you clean out your intake, about 30% or more of that ends up sticking to the inside of your combustion chamber.... is it really worth cleaning it on the vehicle?

Why not just take it off... clean it by hand or better yet hot-tank it.... it will only cost a set of gaskets, and not put contaminants deeper into your engine glazing it over.

I used sea foam with no probs. Did to my buddies Ls, no probs. We also took the term "spirited driving" on the bottle seriously and went out to waste little over 1/4 tank. I ran 1/3 in the case, vac, and fuel tank. 155k on my car and 190k on the teg. We both saw great results. But do remember this stuf I think was made for carbed V8s. This is my own personal experience and if some have had bad ones then there could be something to it.

i just used some of this today...got paid and said what the heck..i went out bought it and ran it through my crank case and booster and man let me tell you...all of the sh*t that can out my exhaust it seriously smelt like a can of gas sitting for like 2 years...after about 5 mins of all that crap burning up i took it around the block a couple of times and it seriously runs like a brand new motor very smooth quicker responce better idling i just can believe it...i seriously recoment this product

I have ran this stuff in my moms car,dads 97 f150,brothers civic,my ej, and many of my friends cars.Never had one problem,though I have seen people go to dumping this stuff in at a high volume rather than just letting it trickle in the vaccum line while holding the idle steady at 1500 rpm's.I usaully put 1/2 of it in the vac. line and the other half in my gas tank and it does burn that carbon buildup off of your valves quite well.

true that....cant be to greedy with this stuff...you have to follow directions very carefully

absolutely. I completely trust this stuff, it works well and will do ur motor good. Ive put it in my gas tank, and sucked it through the vac line but have never put it in the crankcase, i have to try that.

If You have over 150k on your engine be wary. I used it in my crx (200k mi)and my wifes car 165k mi, per instructions. It ate all the carbon off my pistons and my car was like a portable smoke bomb. Had to replace the engine. My wifes car ran fine for about a week then the cel came on and her car started smoking. I'm not saying the product is bad just saying think twice if you've got a lot of miles on your engine.
