Default Stethoscope det can questions

I have asked this before but since I lost my job I have free time to do dumb shit again. I made my own det can today similar to the one danz made in his post: https://www.d-series.org/forums/diy-f.../104254?page=2 almost exactly the same same but I used a Harbor Freight stethoscope. I cannot figure out why when I'm driving it's not very loud. Of course the farther away you get from the stethoscope sound travels Les however my entire line is only 5 - 6 feet but I cannot get a good sound I mainly just wondering if this will make a difference when the car is actually detonating instead of just normal . The car is just Na right now trying to figure things out before the turbo goes on

Hey man I made a det can also from danz original, not exactly the same though. Its somewhere in my build thread. The mother fucker is so loud it almost hurts your ears haha. Not really but if you have the stethoscope (mine also from hf) you can hear it plain as day wot.

BTW, shouldn't this be called a dethoscope instead of a det can? lol

edit: I found the pics. I used copper line as a splitter for the stethoscope, brazed all that shit together, air tite.

Use a copper reducer to allow the rubber tubing to slide over the copper.

Here's my setup guys HF stethoscope crammed into 1/8'' rubber vacuum line crammed into 3/8'' compressor air hose. Copper pipe bolted to the exhaust manifold like you guys too with slits cut in the end to slide copper over the air hose. Should I not use air hose? I thought about shortening it as much as possible and moving the copper to maybe an IM bolt to shorten the length cuz as I said the sound is defying from really close up to the engine.

Seems like a lot of audible loss would occur with that design. You also have the diaphragm in place which I'm not sure if that's helping or hurting you. Here's mine

The diaphragm and the metal rod are meant to pick up sound by contact, not really meant to pick up sound waves that move through the air

Mine is loud enough to boderline discomfort during the higher RPMs during 3rd gear pulls. Was easily able to detect knock with this setup

OP you mounted it to the exhaust manifold stud/bolt

move it lower. just to right of block stamp like above examples.

top of the stroke is not a great place.

all factory vehicles have it below deck in some way, whether block webbing directs pulses further to a mounting spot, or otherwise.

I have read on some websites a very generic rule of thumb is 75% up the cylinder. supposed to catch the most rattle as detonation is of course trying to reverse the piston direction

That makes sense now the diaphram is probably whats hurting me Ill try and do something like paterico did and eliminate the diaphram and maybe use a barb fitting. It makes sense now for the sound to travel through air rather through vibrations.

I meant to put it in the place you guys put yours I just need to find the bolt that goes there im not even sure what its used for? every civic ive had has nothing there lol. Ill find out the thread pitch and put it in that place thanks guys!

Yes that is a much nicer setup.

Mitch, you've reduced it's effectiveness by however you inserted it onto the stethoscope, you actually need a decent hole to insert the tube on.

That's like a 1/8" tube on a needle... You reduced the sound wave intensity by a huge %. I think even just mounting to the 1/8" tube directly will increase volume by a good margin.

I think I will try and pull out the metal rod and drill A 3/8'' hole in the top of the thin plastic diaphram and slide the 3/8 air hose in the diaphram and glue around it.

Glue isn't necessary, you can hose clamp it if sliding off is an issue though.
