Default Using AEM WB as OEM o2 sensor

Hi mates. I rencently purchased a chipped P28 + Burn2 + Ostrich 2.0 and I would like to use my AEM UEGO as the OEM O2 sensor.

But the UEGO doesnt have the narrow band emulator (0-1v) it just has the 0-5v output. Is there any trick or something to to use it with my ECU without moddifing it (the ECU) as I read on MGPFI?

If I use the 0-5v output as ECU input... the readings will be right? I mean, if the datalog shows by exaple 14.0, will be that number right? what range of values can I read in that way?

the highest voltage the ecu can see with out modification to the ecu board is 3.5 volts. you will need to scale the afr to voltage. if you read the instruction manual that came with the uego, it tells you how to change the the voltage on the gauge so you can wire in the o2 sensor to the ecu.

This is what I found:

Configuring Calibration Outputs
The AEM default position is (P0). When set to (P0) (Figure 10A), the gauge displays AFR values. (P1) is the same as (P0), except the gauge displays lambda values. These settings (P1 and P0) implement a linear calibration with the most useful voltage range possible (0-5V). The AFR calibration (P2) is linear and similar to (P1) with a smaller voltage range (1-2V). The AFR calibration (P3) emulates the Autronic Wideband O2 Sensor calibration (0-1V). The AFR calibration (P4) emulates a non-linear Nernst Cell calibration (0-1V). Refer to the Table 3 and figure 9 for specific calibration details.

I think if the ECU only reads from 0-3.5v , according this table , in P0-P1 mode I can read from 10-17 AFR wich is enough for datalogging and tuning, right?

yes but I have a dataloging cable solded in the ecu, so I do a datalogging now, Im using the narrow OEM O2 sensor, and this is a bad start for ECU tuning. In the other hand, if I replace the OEM for the AEM, I can datalog more accurate readings.

Anyways, The gauge is still working, because the 0-5v cable of the AEM comes from the gauge.

I have the LC1 wideband from Innovate which has a programmable narrowband output as well. The default setting is at the stoic setting so straight from the box I could use it as a narrowband in place of the OEM. In quickly reading through the AEM instructions it appears as though they only have the 0-5V output(wideband), so I don't think you can use it in place of the OEM sensor right out of the box. However, if you find a way to scale its output to 0-1V with 0.5V set to @ 14.7 AFR, I don't see why you couldn't do it. So my question is, do the instructions tell you how to program the output voltage for a specific AFR reading?

Just disable O2 and get afr input straight from the wideband instead of the ECU.

It's not totally clear to me what you're trying to do here but keep in mind that the WB and NB output signals are very very different. The WB has a linear signal that indicates an increase in AFR in proportion to an increase in voltage. The NB signal shows 1 volt until an AFR of 14.7 is hit then it quickly drops to 0v. This graph should help illustrate that.



One thing that's clear to me is that these signals can be very sensitive to outside interference so I wouldn't split the output from the sensor to a gauge and ECU at the same time. PLX recommends that noice filtering capacitors be added to theuir circuits and even Honda uses shielded wires in their OEM O2 wires.

Therefore, my recommendation is to use a WB that has a separate NB and WB output and use the NB for your ECU's closed loop operation and the WB for tuning, datalogging, or gauge display.

The AEM doesn't support NB output. But, that's how I had my LC-1 configured; although wideband output wasn't hooked up to anything as it already has RS232 output. For the AEM, you have to wire in your own RS232/DB9 connector.

If your header has two O2 bungs; use one for the OE O2 and use the other for wideband/tuning.

Don't you think that P4 (AFR Nernst Emulation) is the same as sql_civic shows in his graph??? maybe I can use the P4 mode as ECU imput.

You can use that for input, but it'll still be useless for tuning; you lose accuracy.

btw, for my comment about AEM NB output; it can't do both*

well, then if I wanna use for tuning, what should I do?

(Im real noob on ecu tuning, I gonna tune with crome.)

I have a nokia cable for datalogging soldered to de ecu.

The AEM have 2 wires, one for datalogging (blue) and one for 0-5v output, so I should use one for dataloging and the other for ecu imput, right?



First: If I use a RS232 connector to dataloging the AEM BLUE Serial Output, does anyone have the schematics for wiring my AEM output cable to the connector? The WHITE (Nernst Emulation converted) cable shuold go to the ECU O2 pin, right?

Second: I dont know how to combine the AFR reading in the RS232 connector with the nokia dataloging cable. Because in crome the dataloging port is just ONE, and I need 2, one for AEM AFR and other for ecu parameters, right?

The manual should have the schematic; but IIRC you're just using 2 pins of the DB9 connector. Yes, the white would go to O2 input. The only thing I'm not sure is, if the programming changes the serial output. In other words, if it's set to "Nernst"; both serial and O2 signal would be 0-1v.

RS232 is serial. It would go to the serial port on the computer or a serial to USB adatper; but the program must be able to read off of two com ports.

Honestly, best method is to just modify the ECU to read 0-5v. I just realized, you'd be throwing a CEL for O2 heater anyways so might as well go in there and disable it.

I wonder why I didn't notice this: You can probably use P2 and just adjust the tables.

Or; just adjust the tables for wideband(the ECU will read to about 3.8v IIRC without modification)

Im a little scared of modyfing the ecu for that, anything could go wrong and make the ecu useless.
