Default First time building

Hello everyone - first post! I've had an account on hater tech for 10 years, but the knowledgeable people seem to be around a lot less than they used to be.

So I have a 93 Civic CX with the 70hp d16b8 in it and the really loooooong ratio 5 speed. No A/C, no power steering, nada. My sister in law bought this car in the late 90s used and has had it until about 6 months ago. I bought the car, since I have a soft spot for it. I like having a 3rd car in case of emergencies, and the price was good.

It ran, but wouldn't pass emissions here in Nashville. Turns out they couldn't get an accurate reading with the tailpipe sniffer. Since it had a cracked exhaust manifold, I had it replaced from engine to tail pipe. Sister in law kind of neglected the car in recent years, so I anticipated a problem or two. It's gonna need a clutch and the suspension needs to be rebuilt. It does have a relatively recent timing belt/water pump and axles.

I let a family member borrow it, which was prolly a mistake. He's kind of a shadetree mechanic, and he said the head gasket popped and he replaced it, but when I got it back yesterday the car smokes. It's only when you give it gas and even then only like in town stoplight to stoplight, but still. It's not just a small poof, it's a pretty decent amount of smoke.

Since it has 221k on the original engine, I figured I'd try rebuilding it myself. I have a cherry picker, some jack stands, air tools, an engine stand, and a decent torque wrench. I'll toss in a new clutch while I'm at it. I'm not really looking for an upgrade this time around. This car will be what my kids learn to drive stick on, and maybe I'll do something crazy when they're done with it. I'm aiming to stock for now.

Here's where my questions start. Aside from a bunch of fairly grainy youtube videos, I haven't come across a solid step by step on how to rebuild this thing. Anyone have a suggestion for a solid guide? Used to be the Haynes manuals you get at auto parts stores were pretty solid. Do they still sell those, and do people still use them? Where do people get rebuild kits, pistons, bearings, etc from for 25 year old D series? I see stuff on ebay, amazon, and sites I've never heard of before, but in my experience it's always good to ask on an enthusiasts forum first. Also, what gotchas should I watch out for? My plan is to remove the engine, figure out if I need it bored and/or the crank turned, and start buying parts from there.

Iím new here but have found a wealth of knowledge searching. You might not find a video or build log that fits your application exactly but you can find what you need. Watch a video on replacing the engine, one on replacing the head gasket, one on replacing the main bearings, and eventually you will absorb enough. Donít be afraid to dive right in. I just started tearing things apart and will ask when I hit the wall. Good luck and I hope you find what you need.

Factory service manual is the way to go. Not condoning piracy but there are plenty of free copies of the FSM online.

There are various “rebuild kits” on eBay and whatnot that contain gaskets, seals, etc. A lot of them are decent but you’ll want an OEM multilayer steel head gasket, probably from the Y8, instead of what’s in the kit.

I chose to go with OEM seals and gaskets but you’ll spend more that way.

In terms of bearings, OEM bearings are offered in various sizes (color coded) to allow you to achieve very tight tolerances but most will order aftermarket bearings which will usually let you get pretty close to OEM tolerances. Even the bearings in these “standard” sized aftermarket bearing sets aren’t all exactly the same size and you can often swap them around to get the best clearances. Plastigage is accurate enough to allow you to measure bearing clearances without a nice set of calipers and bore gauges.

If you go the OEM route, I’d suggest that you get a detailed shopping list and order through Majestic Honda (www.hondaautomotiveparts.com) and for the little stuff you may forget, look at the Honda eStore and find the dealership in your city that offers the best prices.

Take lots of pictures when dismantling and label everything carefully. It will seem like a chore at the time, but you'll be less likely to find yourself with a bolt or washer or two you can't remember where to fit.

The D15B8's are known for cracking and loosing chunks of valves when they are over-heated.

Sounds like the person who borrowed it beat the ever living shit out of it, as they are a very low power setup that runs fairly cool.

He/she should NOT have fucking touched it if it had popped a headgasket. More than likely he /she was beating on it and a dirty old cooling system had a sticky thermostat and it stuck shut or something
