Default D16A1 or ZC or both?

My 1989 Integra has the D16A1, is this considered a ZC? I know that they are different motors but what is that difference?

The D16A1 is the USDM motor in the generation 1 integra. Its rated at 113hp for 86-87 and 118hp for 88-89. The JDM DOHC ZC is rated at 130HP. They are virtually the same motor minus a few differences, really the head. The camshafts have a slightly higher lift duration which accounts for the 12hp difference along with the factory 4-2-1 headers. The bolts on the valve cover are located on the outside versus the inside.

The USDM D16A1:

The JDM DOHC ZC:

I just tracked down and swapped over the headers and camshafts.

These motors may be similar but will NOT fit in the same car.
D16a1 will fit 84-87 Civic/CRX
JDM DOHC ZC will fit 88-91 Civic/CRX
JDM DOHC ZC will also fit 92-00 with wiring changes and a different dizzy.

The mounts, tranny and axles from these motors are different, making it very difficult to swap them into the wrong years of cars.

Yup, the civic ZCs have the VC bolts closer to the plug holes. The integra ZCs have them along the outside of the VC

wrong..any d16a1 will fit into an 84-87 crx/civic whether its a black (88-89 teg motor) or brown top (86-87 teg motor). these will not fit into 88-91 crx/civics.
the 1g browntop zc will fit into 84-87 crx/civics, the 2g jdm zcs will only fit the 88-91's. the parts are mostly interchangeable..mostly all but the blocks.

all integra ZC and d16a1's have the valve cover bolts on the inside.....

Civic zc's have them on ythe outside and do not bolt onto the 86-89 integras..

86-87 integras need a browntop Zc with only come one way....These happen to also bolt into the g1 Crx's and g3 civics.....
