Talking how to deck a Block

How to Deck a Block

The block was brought in to be prepped for rebuild.

It has been Bored and Honed to .020 over std.

Checking the block I found it had .0025 taper from front to back and has water pitting.

I set the block on the machine fixture; the block is on the main saddles.

I make a .0005 pass, Cyl #1 is shorter than Cyl # 4

I see I have a good level set up side to side, notice the dark low spots around #1 cylinder.
A MLS head gasket will not have had a good sealing surface.

[

Pass #2 is a .0015 cut

Still some pitting at the fire ring of the head gasket.

One more pass of .0015
The block looks good, and has a good head gasket sealing surface.

Yes, I do If not, then it is about impossible to knock the pistons in and not damage the rings.

But It has been known if you piss off the machinist... a small detail like that could be over looked.

What is that bar doing sticking from both sides of block, on the crank place?

And how you leveling block against table or machine?
I guess you use dial indicator to find high spots on corners , and correct it by shimming the block if not parallel to the machine head.

could you please explain the process of leveling ?

The block is bolted to the bar.

The block mains rest on the bar, so the front to rear is leveled to the mains.

The a common machinist bubble level is used to set side to side level

I do not have one, just never been involved in a build that needed it.

Now I have modded blocks/heads and used larger than stock head studs when more clamping force is needed.

About just drill and tap. Common on higher boosted 4g to convert from the 11mm/12mm hear studs to 1/2

Not all that supersonic, just make sure it is drilled and tapped straight

I see it done simpler done on a closed deck block.

I know of too many boosted 4s running 70 lb/min turbos that are flat milled and running just fine.

If I had to do something fancy, I would o ring the block and cut a receiver groove in the head, Use stainless wire, and a good HG
