Talking How to check a head for warp.

How to check a head for warp.

The first thing to do is remove all carbon and old gasket material.

Then with a machinist straight edge, Check all 8 positions.
If .003 can be fit under the straight edge, the head needs to be resurfaced.
Also Note the fire ring grooves from the head gasket, if the head has these, and checks flat. The head needs to be resurfaced.

First position.

Links to the other 7 positions.

So the last time I took a head into be rebuilt, they wanted the cam also. They were looking for some "rock" in how the cam fit into the journals. If the cam had too much rock, the head had warped too much and was junk.

It was an easy request, so I just gave them the cam and didn't inquire too much. What was that all about?

Checking for cam grab.

Its common to do, no use building a head if the cam will not spin in it properly.
