Default sunbwoofer coil resistance question

ive been running a DVC pioneer championship series pro 12" sub since mid november. the amp is a mono sony explode which is 2 ohm stable.

the past week my amp protection kept coming on. i was thinking maybe one of the coils may have burnt out even though the speaker suppose to be able to handle the amp's max output.

turns out neither coil is burnt but each one is reading 3ohms and there suppose to be 4ohms per coil.

what could cause this????

right now i can only run my amp with one coil hooked up. im not going to bother hooking them up in series since that will lower the amps output....

the fact that running a 3 ohm and 4 ohm coil in parallel is only 1.7 ohms and that's enough versus 2 ohms to drive your amp into OC protection...

both coils are reading 3 ohms not just one.

what would cause the resistance of each coil to go down ??

so your parallel resistance is 1.5 ohms, definitely too low for a 2ohm amp

excellent question, I have no idea.

I know its too low, im just running 1 coil now and its fine. except know i had to crank up the bass boost to get a lil more thump.

Try to connect it in the series connection, as on the photo, so you gonna use two coils instead of one, like you running now. You gonna have 6 ohm but its not a big deal. You will get a little less watts output. You can use 6ohm speaker on lower ohm amp nothing is wrong with that, but you can't do it the other way around.

You will trash that sub quick only running one VC!
Your best bet is to run the sub in series and have 6ohms.
( you will take a drop in rms watts, but nothing's going to burn up)

Then if your not happy w that power out put either replace the sub w one @2 ohms equivalent resistance or replace your amp w one that can handle 1.7ohms.

why would it burn up running just one coil? I never heard that before....

Dvc subs were designed to run w both coils, if you only run one it will cause a lot of extra stress on the one voice coil being powered and cause damage to the coil/magnets/cone

You cannot measure voice coil resistance while it is static, 4 and 8 ohm ratings are just a general standard, aka "nominal impedance"

Impedance depends on the freq. being played as well as the box design of IB (infinite baffle)

Old JBL 1500 GTi I bought from Joe Rodgers (you know, the guy who had the first HyBrid forum) as well as other 1500's would test out at 1.95-2.2x ohms static for a 4 ohm "rated" subwoofer.

when I first got it and checked they were around 3.8 ohms each. the protection on the amp never came on till about a week ago and I had the speaker since November. ive had the amp since early 2012...
