It kinda depends on how much you take off the head and if you also take something off the block.

If you have no data you can not do your sums.

IIRC, the combustion chamber loses ~4.3cc of volume for every 1mm milled.
Plug that into the zeal calculator (take away from the combustion chamber volume if milling head).

But that's only constant if you aren't cutting material away from the combustion chamber (like 1mm of a Z6 head should reduce the volume by 4.3cc, but once you hit the quench areas, it's not a linear decrease in volume).

Getting longer rods would be an infinitely better option imo

oh boy, already a thread for this, except my question is:

how much can i mill the head before the pistons and valves get to close for comfort?

stock cam for now but will upgrade to turbo cam later.

You can mill the head until the deck gets to thin or the cut gets to close to the valve seats, whichever happens first. With a D it is normally the cut gets to close to the seats. You can check this with a depth mic if the head is off.

Piston to valve depends on a l;ot of things, not the least of which is which head and which pistons you have.

The Vitaras should clear anything you could take off the head with almost any cam. The dish is )(#$)(#$ huge.

I'm getting 10.9 -1 compression with vitara pistons, fjt rods, and a milled y8 head. The Zeal calculator is wrong when milling the y8 head. You have to cc it when done.

You can actually measure how much to take off to get the ccs you want by setting the head upside down and PERFECTLY LEVEL on a bench then filling it with the correct volume of fluid. Make sure you use the same valves already seated or at least close to seated and the same plugs for real accuracy.

Measure from the deck to the fluid with a depth mike. Allow for the meniscus. Measure in several places to verify level.

Observe the amount the fluid covers the valve seat.

how do you find the 10:1 compression as compared to a 7.5:1 compression.

does the car feel much more responsive?
does the turbo spool noticeably quicker?
does the car feel much quicker out of boost?

This is the way I find out how much to cut.

Don't know yet. Still not completed. I hope to have it in the car in the next two weeks. Race season is here in 5 weeks.

The answers should be:
Yes
don't know
yes

I'm hoping to make more power with less boost and lots of torque down below 2500 rpm. I should have instant spool with the turbo I'm running.
