View Full Version : High RPM D

I recently was given a couple D series blocks and was planning on building them. Does anyone know whats the fastest you can spin a D. I know the rod ratio sucks on these things so is there any rod/crank combos that still retain a high compression with a better rod ratio.

the d15b blocks have a better rod ratio but its also about the cam you use. i know rod ratio plays a big part with higher rpm's but you have to make power up there. check out bisimoto.com

Why rev so high ? reving a D past 8000 is for hard competition, your better too boost, nitrous, sc, or go with better rods stroke ratio engine like b16A/B that you will be able to rev like a bike 10 000rpm+ with good built.
You can get good power udner 8000rpm. I like D engine not for high rev and strenght, but it's for the easy way to play with them, cheap parts, many engine are available and not pricy like fucking overpriced B engines.

yeah i think it would be cool to build an all motor D that will beat B motors, but think it would be easier to just put some supra pistons and B16 rods in it then go with a junkyard boost setup.

torque is where its at..i prefer to make grunt power around 3000 rpm..usable.
high revving is for motorcycles.....

x2 :TU: For an awesome daily driver, that is what you want.... I like to make power and the only way to make all out N/A power from a D is way up high in the revs. But even with my levelX cam I only rev to 9200rpm

i used to spin my d to 8600 on stock motor.. i didnt give a shit.. then i put in a gude cam and took it to 9k on stock valvesprings and retainers.. blew the motor on a 9400rpm mis shift ooops lol :)
and no it didnt send a piston to the moon or a hole in the block... floated some valves, bent 3 valves and put a hole in 1 piston.. the motor still ran :)

How high would you liek to spin it? d15b will spin pretty high on its own. You can can make a D16 spin pretty high aswell......for enough money

Our block will spin to 10,000 rpm, rota92 sets the rev limiter at 9500 and power shifts at 9300rpm. Car has gone 9.85 and has 26 passes on the engine.
It's all in how you build it and tune it.

What kind of stuff do you need to get that high? Just a piston/rod/crank/camshaft set?

see that set-up makes the sohc want to rev,
only problem i see is that... most noobs would only rather spend mostly on bolt ons, and a chipped ecu..nad probably an ebay header and hope to rev like the kind of motors u mentioned ... hahaha
it is possible, just need a little bit of money and alot of common sense,
(lets sit back and watch a couple of kids blow motors now)

LOL yup so true, I spend good money on my motor but it was built to handle the abuse I give it. Some things can be done cheap other things you gotta spend some money on it.

i second that tunaboy! hehe
fine example is ur build, ur like what? revving to 7800 only... lol but hey... its worth 8500rpm for other motors, and ud prolly still out run them.. hehe
its just more than rpm's than what most people think of it.. its not a video game its not a bike.. if u wana rev, ud have to build it right..and if u get to rev it high.. ud still need to get the right gearing on the tranny etc or else its gona be "not that fast" lol
back when i used to run my mini-me set up (old ) it ran using a stock p08 jdm ecu from a d15, and id walk other sohcs so bad , sohc that wer running a p30 jdm b16 box.. revvin to 8500rpm cuz they cool like that hahahaha and i shifted at 6800rpm hahaha

Plus you can set your motor up for that motor, I have a few changes on my motor that drops the peak but helps the whole RPM. I could make changes to make power at a higher rpm, but lose power over most of the powerband. I could redyno and brag about a peak hp but my car would be slower.

exactly...
lowering it and making the most use of it in the Meaty range lol
hehe understanding the dynamics of the whole thing up to the drivetrain is more important than wanting to rev to 9k like a mad tyt jdm TypeR yo

damn i started reading this and was hoping you were gonna say a piston went to the moon....ahhhh well...anyways i reved my d to 8 ish all stock all day long and i beat the piss out of it cause because like he said i didnt give a shit. i hit rev limiter more times than you could ever imagine humanly possible. i drove for 17 miles at rev limiter when i blew my tranny so i think 8200 is pretty safe.

All becuase the motor will spin to 8 or 9k doesnt mean your making power up there. On this board there might be 5 motors that make power between 8-9k and Im not in that list.

you obviously dont know shit about revving a stock sohc vtec past 8k.. mine lasted a year and ran 15.15's.. mostly stock cold air intake exhaust chipped ecu with b16 maps vtec at 5300 rev limit at 9k.. and yes ive hit the rev limit plenty of times... shit i ran a pos gude race cam with stock valvesprings on the same motor raised the rev limit to 9500 and i revved the piss out of it... mostly 9300 rpm shifts.. it blew up cuz i missed a gear and floated a valve...
if you take care of it... and you have the necessary parts to rev your motor high safely then it will last.. mine lasted a year.. and shit thats a long time ive been through 10 sohc's and one dohc zc in 5 years... some motors are just pieces of shit

All becuase the motor will spin to 8 or 9k doesnt mean your making power up there. There is no reason to spin a sohc vtec motor that high... It amazes me how many people think more RPM means go faster. If you dont have the cam or compression to support that kinda of RPM then your not making power and going slower.
RPM Really Pounds Motors.

hahaha yea i know that.. shit i run a b18c5 now.. i shift at 8200 rpm rev limits set to 9k it will pull there but theres no point... i have my power from 5200-9k but eh...
idk mine made power up there.. well atleast it felt like it, i never felt a loss of power like most cars you can feel them lose power past 7k, mine just kept pulling the whole way...
lol im not trying to talk shit.. now i read my other post it sounds like it is.. ive had many single cams that wouldnt pull past 6500 and would float valves at 7400, and ive had a very rare few.. maybe 2 out of 10 that would just keep me planted in my seat the whole way up the rpm range to the governer
