View Full Version : Confused with basic timing

Hi all, basically started going over the engine today and found that when i line up my cam pulley and crank pulley, the no1 cylinder is on exhaust instead of compression.

To have the no1 cylinder on comp stroke the cam pulley is upside down. This is odd as there is no way the pulley can go on multiple ways!

the other problem is that with it set up like this the rotor arm is constantly 1 too far round than it should be. i.e when it should be on 1 its on 3 etc.

i cant get my head around this any ideas?

Car is a a6/z6 mini me with obd1 conv.

i think the easiest way to fix it would be rotate your crank so that the word up on your cam gear is facing. check to make sure that the #1 piston is at tdc either by pulling your dist cap or pulling out the #1 spark plug. once it is at tdc slide your timing belt off and rotate just your crank to line up the single line with the timing mark on the timing belt plastic cover.

i bought a civic 2 yrs ago from a guy who was having trouble getting it started. i checked the timing and it was 180 degrees off. i just set the cam gear to tdc then slide the timing belt of and rotated the crank as i said previously. and all went well...good luck...

anyone agree?

the piston is either up or down

the cam is what determines if it's a comp stroke or exhaust stroke

As long as you're crank and cam marks agree with each other, that's all that matters.

(for instance, you could set the motor to #1 TDC compression stroke, pull off the head, rotate the crank one full revolution, so #1 is theoretically at TDC exhaust, put the head on and set the cam-to-crank marks (which is #1 TDC compression) and it would make no difference.)

Any other ideas on my rotor arm being out?

thanks

this can only be the case if you have your wires installed incorrectly.

forget what any book or anyone else is trying to tell you about your distributor and follow this:

firing order is 1-3-4-2

set the motor to TDC, pull off the dizzy cap, to see which tower the rotor is pointing towards. That will be your #1 wire. Then install the rest of the wires following the firing order.

made a discovery today, i did a mini me about 2 years ago with this head and had the top end slip teeth.

found to day that it sheard the woodruff key and spun around between the inner and the outer parts of the pulley.

have to now re-tap the thread in the cam and then i can get it all back together

just relived ive found the problem and that i wasnt going mad with the timing issues!!!
