View Full Version : D15 Rod options
Opinions wanted on the strength of the stock D15b7 Rods. Im having some shot-peened. Other options besides Forged? I am considering even dropping in a D16 crank and rods w/ the PM3 flat tops. Will it work?

B16 rods are 134mm but they need a bit of work.
The crank swap should work fine :D

do you have the rods currently out where you can look at them or atleast visualy seen them firsthand? My pinky is literally fatter than the B7 rods. Yes you may be able to get more strength out of the rods by shot peening (not really, just eliminates weak spots) but I still dont trust them. I am impressed however how well my 230k mile rods are holding up under boost. Must have a freak set lol. The next option would be crower rods. They are a little pricey at 650 bucks but in the end may be worth it depending on what kind of build you are doing. Unfortunatly eagle does not offer any for the D15 engines. Now if you say the D16 crank will fit no prob then why not go with eagle rods for a D16 and forged pistons. I think that may be overkill on most n/a setups but with the revs you pull on a n/a engine stronger rods are a must imo. why not take your time, save up and go all out.
I know what your saying. I have a b2 that has 251,000 miles now. Runs like a charm too.Ive checked all the casting numbers and even have the records from the old lady I bought it from. She kept every record of anything done to the car. Although its not an All-Motor candidate the b2 has proven itself for reliability. Im planning on going all out on my next D15. Maybe even forged rods if I can use the D16 crank/rod setup along with some new PM3's. Just trying to figure out my options before I go and blow any money.

IIRC, the bearing journals on the D16 crank are bigger than the ones on the D15. Hence the D16 crank won't fit into the D15 block.
Do you have the specs on the cranks?

not having the specs in front of me, I know beyond a doubt the z6 crank will not fit in a D15B. the mains are larger on the Z6...you might be able to line bore the bearings to make it fit...but then your making them thinner, hence making them more prone to fail. your better off with sleeving and boring to get the added displacement when it comes to the D15's...on that note...the Z1 uses the same length rod as the Z6 with different pistons...the bonus is it increases rod/stroke ratio to a healthy 1.62:1!...so, in theory you could get aftermarket rods made to Z1 specs, run overbore Z1 pistons with the vtec head and create a little monster!
Any difference on the mains between the D15b's and the Z1? Or the same specs? Only difference lies in their rod length?

The Z1 pistons have a 27mm or around there Compression Height compared to the D15Bx of 30mm. That where the extra 3mm rod lengh comes from. The crank is the same.
Hmmmm. Thought sounds pretty damn interesting. Ive been thinking of ideas for an all motor D15. This might be it. Thanks turntune and sqmark.
D15b7 block/crank
D15z1 rods
Any pistons with a less of a dish? z1=7.05 dish.

At 27mm I'm going for the PMS D17 GX pistons with 1.50 dome.
The D15 cranks aren't up to much anyway so with a longer rod/higher R/S ratio there's less side loading on the pistons so it'll be stronger and rev happier.
My plan is -
D15B7 Block
D15B7 Crank
D16Z6 Rods (outta my spare block)
D17 PMS Pistons
Thats what I was thinking. But Im going with either a y5 or y7 head.
D15b7 Block/Crank
D15z1 rods
D17 GX(PMS) pistons
D16y5 or y7 head

Don't know if I'm going to put the Z6 head on this or not. After the dyno results I'll decide but more than likely VTEC is coming :D
I would still like to find out if you can use the y5 roller rockers on the y7 head. Slap that together and onto the blocks we are speaking of. Can you say D-series Hybrid? 8)

How to get a 1.6 crank for cheap... call up an engine parts distributor, tell them you need a 1.6 crank, and you bring them your old 1.5 crank as a core(just dont tell them its a 1.5, and they will be none the wiser  . This way you get the 1.6 crank for basically the cost of getting a crank turnned at a machine shop. Damn, I have no ethics
