I tried searching and either came up with nothing or 200 results...

I noticed on this site you can give "rep" points. It seems pretty cool, can someone explain the ins and outs of it? When should you give points, when do you get points and what do the points do for you.

Well theres positive and negative rep. I give positive rep out to someone who is very helpfull with good info on a post, when i compliment them on pics and videos they post, or for just making me laugh my ass off. Neg rep i havent really given unless they fricken desearve it like the spammers they can go to hell with there trying to plug stupid shit. Or if your someone being really negative to members on the site. And your rep power which is under your avatar is the number of rep points you can give someone. Hope this helps.

rep points just tell other members ur a respected member on the site. if u have red block then that tells members u are prob full of shit and they souldnt listen to u. yes u need a certain amount of rep points in order to get 1 rep power..

lol you are not obligated to rep back. Just take the time to keep an eye on the one who repped you and rep them when you think they have a good or helpful post. No need to rep on shitty posts just because they repped you.

I see people with one green block but they have 4 rep power, then I see people with 6 rep blocks but only 1 rep power. Post count doesnt seem to have much to do with it either. Does anyone know?

You might know it better as the Karma system. Other forums had some kind of karma system but this one is pretty slick allowing members to give postive or negative karma to other members, gives members karma for posting, registering, all kinds of good things.

What changes? Not much really, users get pips (little graphics). You can also set up promotions to add users to different usergroups if they hit a certain reputation level.

The reputation system is just for a thumbs up or thumbs down on a post. It doesn't affect anything other than how others on the forum may feel about a user with terrible reputation.

Reputation is a pretty meaningless thing actually, although some people take it far too seriously.

All it's supposed to be is approval or disapproval of a certain post, but very often it get's used by some members against other members because of a grudge or general dislike of somebody.

Either way, they are commonly used by most forums.

The rep power however is done by post count, and rep... and a weird equation

My Rep Power is 20 yet I only have, 16150 rep points

On forums i moderated in the past the rep system worked like this, The rep power value is how many points of rep you add to some one when you positive rep them and the amount you subtract when you neg rep them, and that is added or taken away from their total points. rep power value increased 3 ways, 1 was how long you was a member, 2 how many post you had, and 3 how many points you had. now the dots are a different scale, they only went up in proportion to how much rep you gave away, people who spread rep alot could gain dots easy and it had nothing to do with the rep power number, now on this site they seem to have it set up a little different, infact i almost think its backwards, I noticed on this one the dots go up as you gain points, at first for every thousand or so, then when you hit the yellow it seems to go 1 per 3000 points you get, The rep power number on this site is also different then sites i am familiar with, so while i cant tell you exactly how this particular forums parameters are set up i hope you at least understand what the possible settings can be.

So it must be some crazy ass equation involving all the variables, posts, time registered (seniority), rep given, and rep recieved. Who knows maybe some ratios are used, like posts per year/day, or rep recieved versus rep given, etc. I may be losing interest in this, considering rep isn't really an issue for a lurker like myself....

mods/admin can change your rep, but why would they? rep is based on the person who rep'ed you. if they felt it was bad info or a bad post, neg rep is what you get.
