just did a compression test on my motor; got 210 psi across the all 4 cylinders but the problem is the car burns oil like mad, i get poor gas mileage, and everytime i pull the spark plugs out there's oil all over the thread's, i did the test cause i wanted to confirm that the rings were worn out now i'm confused. any body that can point me in the right direction i;d appreciate it.
it's a d15b8 with d16z6 head with 3 angle valve job, and an intake.

Okay, well did you do the test cold, warm, or hot? Pedel at WOT? People say to put some oil on top on the cyl while doing the test to see if the compression goes up. So if you where at like 180, 150, 180, 180...throw some oil in the 150 cyl. If it indeed goes up, then the rings/ringlands are shot.

BTW, if I remember right...per the Helms manual, factory compression was supposed to be 210 across the board.

175-180 is the norm, but with the compression bump from the smaller chamber head, 210 is about right.

PCV hooked up and working?

unhooked PCV and bad rings = cropduster for hire.

You need to do a leak down test.

i did the test right after i took the car out for about 30 min ride, i blocked the throtlle body wide open pulled the ecu fuse disconected the distributor wires i'm stumped. when i step on it as the rpms go up more smoke comes out.
my next purchase was going to be a leakdown tester. unless i'm overlooking something.

Compression numbers look fine, no reason to do a leakdown. How much oil is it using? Does the motor have a lot of miles on it? Are the valve cover tube seals leaking?

o rly??

I trust Robin.......but I'd still do a leakdown when bored :)

8-10% leakdown won't effect the cranking compression numbers.

25% leakage and what was 175-180 psi was 160 psi, car still ran great!

when i floor it for and let it vtec it would lose maybe about 1 quart of oil, plus i get poor gas milage and the engine doesnt seem as poweful as it should. it's ridiculous how much oil i burn just revving it up you start to see blue smoke.

Is there oil in your spark plug holes cause you have a bad valve cover gaskit?

When you do the com test pull all the plugs and the coolant cap then do the test with the motor warm.

did the test when the motor was warm the first time and right after a 30 min drive the second time, did not pull radiator cap cause i didn't know about that one not listed in haynes manual instructions.
update: put a new pcv valve in and it hasnt smoked as much oil it used to before; i used to look in my rear view mirror and saw nothing but a cloud of blue smoke.... btw old pcv valve was missing the ball and spring inside for some stupid ass reason when i removed it it was caked with oil. i'm gonna try changing valve cover gasket see if that stops oil from leaking into spark plug
gap.

oh yea still gonna get a leak down tester just to be sure everythings ok.

There you go, that was probably the problem. I bet your idle is a little better now also.

my pcv is a hose to the ground from that black box and a breather filter and I'm not buring anything. No problems.

Really bad valve seals can cause higher than normal compression numbers....

How does that work, BT?

i had a slight problem with the idle before but once i adjusted the iacv the car idled fine, but on my way to work this morning a lot less smoke! so i'm happy about that.:D

I've seen a few engines from japan that failed emissions because of a bad PCV valve, and you couold see in the intake where it had been sucking in oil.
if your head has lots of miles on it could be valve guide seals too, but typically if that's it it's worse on start up.

How does that work, BT?

1/4" thick carbon deposits on the pistons = free compression bump!

Also it constantly seeps oil on the rings thus making a better seal.... along with alot of funk on the tops of the pistons
