Just curious where everyone shifts at when running the quarter mile at the strip, or street for that matter. I suppose I'm applying this mainly to those with an EX tranny, which is what I have. Also, where do you launch at? Thanks.
Current setup:
99 hatch with D16Y7
99 EX tranny and intake manifold
CAI/h/e
etc.

I launch at like 3000, and power shift at around 7200. I can tach out 1/4 mile at 92 on my EX tranny.

dyno your car and see where you make the most power. shift there. launch is dependent on tire size, tread, pressure, etc.

I have to shift past my power point because the stupid gears are waaay to long, it falls right out of VTEC. Even when I shift at redline (7200) it falls back to about 4600. For those next 500rpm until it hits VTEC again, there's no power at all.
Just out of curiosity, why would one shift at the peak power? Since power is a rate of energy per second produced, Power x Time = Energy transferred, so it seems that the fastest time would come from shifting so that the car makes the most power on average. Our old F250 5.4L behaved like that, peak power was around 4k, but if it was shifted at the 4.8k redline it cut about 2 sec off the 0-60. Probably cuz if it was shifted at 4k it fell back to 2500ish, not enough power there.
I'm not saying redline is the way to go; if it makes no power there (comparatively), its useless. Just that it stays in that gear longer to make the most torque at the wheel possible (that's what horsepower's all about), so if its still making good torque, and the torque at the wheel in that gear is still more than if you shifted, stay in the gear.

I don't think it's necessarily the redline you really look at- it's your sweet spot. You gotta keep the RPM's in it. If your sweet spot was 4k-5k (just an example...), then shift so you stay in that range. Mine just happens to be towards the higher end...it's a honda after all!
