View Full Version : YAY!!!! Turbo xs boost controllers........SUCK (long post)

Well, the title of the thread is actually not true..........ive seen several turbo xs boost controllers work absolutely flawlessy, in fact, i think about 99.99% work just fine........Actually, i think turbo xs has made a pretty good name for themselves in ways of boost controllers (that may or may not be pushing it)

ANYWAYS!!! i bought a dual stage controller of theirs from a deal off of ebay. I purchased it over a year ago, and it was my fault for not checking it when it arrived to see if it worked, but guess what.....its totally worthless and a waste of $175.00

Turns out, right from the factory, this one stupid boost controller is turned SOOO far in, the the brass needle actually dug right into the aluminum......anyone know what happens when two soft metals are forced together? They pretty much like to stay like that. I tried to turn the knob out, but i was a definate NO GO. The screw on both stages snapped directly in half. And this is directly out of the box i mind you.

So yeah, sweet deal. But it gets better.......I deal with the fact that the controller is broken. im not hurting on money at all so i say, oh well basically. I need another one fast because im craving more boost. So i make a trip 1.5 hours away and pick up another turbo xs MBC that i have never seen......it wasnt like the nomral single stages, it was basicall a little tiny round cylinder about 1" long with a vacuum nipple on the end and an allen screw in the middle to adjust bleed-off (it was basically a little bity bleed off valve) You hook it up by T'ing it into the vacuum line that runs from the wastegate to the vacuum source. Well, it is way too small to bleed enough pressure to build anything over 5psi of boost. So i went from 4 psi to 5psi.....SWEET!!! yeah, pretty gay if you ask me. So now im making a ball and spring boost controller. it is cheap but it will work...im tired of being ripped off.

here is the link for the boost controller....i wanted to know peoples opinions on the efficency of these ball and spring types. My tuner said they potentially make the turbo spool a little faster.

let me know what you think...

Have fun with boost spikes when your ho-made MBC decides to stop working on you. Those things are decent, but you HAVE to be VERY careful with them as they don't have much range of adjustment.

do they really boost spike that bad? I plan to run a max of 18 psi.......

Indeed, bad luck, but you are baller. The link you posted lots of passat owners do the same thing.

sucks.. but at your rate you are better off with a EBC Greddy Type S :P

I never had any problems with Hallman Boost Controllers. I had two already.

yeah....well, im gonna have to learn some self control. Im at 5psi right now and loving it. I DO want more already and i know im gonna want to turn it up, but i dont think i will. I had this MBC in my backseat at my finger tips ready to get installed (before i knew it was too small to bleed enough air out) and i refused to touch it until i knew i could get tuned....

i think i can do it......keyword there is "think"

or get a better spring for the boost controller and boost more

bigger spring for the wg u mean?

bigger spring for the wg u mean?

depending on the boost controller and maker the sell spring kits for the boost controller i know cause i have on that allows me to go from 14 to 30 in .5 psi

bigger spring for waste gate? run a larger waste gate to help boost creep or get an adjustable wastegate arm to help control boos

I have a stardard turbo xs boost controller and it doesn't seem to hold boost for shit. I got tired of playing with it for a couple nights and decide to just buy my a bigger wastegate spring. 13 lbs of boost, here I come...

Boost creep? is that why it is not working or it cant hold psi reliably

No boost creep. If I run it off the wastegate itself I'll get 7 lbs of boost steady. If I add the turbo XS mbc on it either drop psi on top or maybe spiking boost more than I want it.

well, im beginning to think the wastegate may be getting stuck at 5 psi........ill check that later today to verify....

EBC is the only way to go :TU:

man i would love to get an EBC that will control boost by every gear, but im not down sith spending that sort of money on a boost controller for a daily driver. I just spent $300 on a wideband and about to drop another $150 for an ostrich.........if i wasnt doing that then i would buy an EBC.

Ive got the one i posted in the link already made......my car is going in the garage on thursday night so i can get the rear main seal replaced.......then on monday, the tuning begins with the new boost controller :TU:

ill let everyone know how the homemade one works out for me

way to pick on his spelling

EBC are good in its own right as it allows good positioning of the adjustment knob.

I have the Greddy Type S EBC and I love it. It is as simple as a MBC but in EBC form. I had two MBC and I got tired of getting out of the car to adjust. I'm glad I spent the extra money to get an EBC. :)

Remember that even with an MBC, the general rule is that you can double your WG spring reliably.
IE you have a 5psi spring in your gate, then with a boost controller you can run up to 10psi...
with a 10 psi spring, you can go from 10-20psi... ETC...

yeah ive heard that, but people run over that alot of the time.....isnt drunkenmaster running 22psi on a 7psi spring?

ill upgrade the spring he in a bit when i know that the boost controller is finally working.

The key is reliably...
Also weak springs tend to open up sooner which increases spool time...

yeah, i definately plan to upgrade.....but im only shooting for 12 psi right now.......before i go up any higher than that i will buy a new spring :TU:!!!
