You can see where I didn't wrap, and where I used it as a skid plate :)

Wow, I didn't know they had colored wrap now!
Stainless is more suceptable to cracking if one uses cheap header wrap. Most 3 series stainless steels have very low tolerances for chlorine, which causes micro-fractures in the structure of the steel, which lead to macro-fractures when thermal cycling is applied.
If you want to make sure your headers last while wrapped, make sure you use the more expensive stuff (like it is THAT much more expensive) that doesn't have anything that contains chlorine in it.
Just for the record, I have seen fingerprints and sharpie marker marks DESTROY 304-ish stainless steels. Just something to think about . . .
If the DC in question was mild steel, then I don't know what to tell you other than that really sucks. Mild steels are less susceptable, but not immune to cracking due to chlorine corrosion.

When I had my manifold wrapped, gravel drive ways with grass centerlines ate the lower wrap. :( I eventually just took it off. I liked it when I had it... much better bay temps.

I will never use header wrap. It keeps the heat in but what people dont understand is that that header will get extremely hot with the wrap on and actually they will start to glow. If it keeps getting hotter, it will actually melt a hole or two in the header. Not worth the hassle.

I've had both my header and turbo manifold wrapped. I'm now selling the header and it looks fine. The turbo manifold was an ssauto and cracked where it wasnt wrapped.

Sounds either like a race motor or a tuning issue.

Sounds either like a race motor or a tuning issue.
That's where high-performance coatings like Jet-Hot originated... header wraps were making headers on race motors literally disintegrate after a couple hours on the track.

I've been told that the cracking can happen where the wrapped part of the header cools off much slower than the unwrapped parts, and the difference in temperatures causes stress from the different rates of expansion/contraction. Makes sense?
I'm wanting to put wrap on my DC. Its in great shape, but it would be good to have lower temps. Where do I get the black wrap?

you think it woulda not rusted if u sprayed the header with high temp paint. then put the heat wrap on it and spray that sealer shit on it?

If you seal the wrap properly, it shouldn't be a problem.

I used black wrap on my header....but the color seems to be all but completely gone from it after only a few thousand miles. Why did the color 'bleach' out so quickly?

My DC has a little surface rust, should I paint it with something first (like BBQ paint) before wrapping it?

Depending on the material used to wrap. (the cheap eBay wrap will not last long at all and will trap water if not wrapped properly). I had my turbo manifold on my B-series wrapped with some wrap I purchased from a machine shop (not sure of brand). Worked great and kept the manifold temp's down as well as its appearance. Never any problems. But I have seen improperly wrapped manifolds trap water and cause rust much faster.

When you put the header on and run the car for the first time, for about a day or so you will get this terible smell from the so called "ceramic" coating. Just warning you..it will go away eventually ;) You can wrap it, but I dont see the need to IMO.

I'm using DEI black wrap and the Silicone coating, I'm going to:
1. Remove, paint it BBQ black
2. Drive it with just BBQ paint to 'cure' it
3. Re-remove, wrap, paint with silicone

after running my dsm hard in the summer time, the turbo manifold will start to glow. i did this several times and you know how many cracks are in it? zero. unless i saw visual evidence of holes being melted i would have to call http://smiliesftw.com/x/bsflag.gif (http://smiliesftw.com)
if you said cracking it would be plausible, but melting holes in an na honda motor header is highly unlikely
i've read in jdmuniverse that it traps water... is that true...
if you use cheap wrap, don't wrap properly, or don't use the sealer...
