I've got a D16Z6 w/ Arias 11.5:1 pistons, exospeed cam, etc etc etc. P28 tuned with crome. I thought I was hearing some detonation so I went back to the tuner. He didn't think it should be detonating, but put the car on the dyno and re-checked everything which he said looked good (I forgot to get a printout of everything so no a/f ratio). Now I still think I'm hearing detonation, and it only happens at above 4K rpm while I struggle to listen for it. Octane booster makes it a bit less noticeable and it seems to happen less often but it doesn't go away completely. I'm running ngk ZFR5J-11 plugs right now, should I go for a colder plug? If so which one...BKR6E-11 or is there a ZFR6-J11? Will a colder plug actually cure detonation or just mask it?

From the mind of Oscar Jackson (Jackson Racing) 10.2 to 1 on a Honda car equipped without a knock sensor is about as high as possible. That was without tuning capabilities.(early 90's). To this day most Piston companies will tell you 10.5 to 1 is the most with 92 octane. Just throwing this out to see if this may help you out.

im running 11.4:1 CR, 91 octane. Not even close to detonating. We were even able to advance timing past 35 degrees without a hint of detonation. This was on the dyno, with Church at the helm.
I have a y8 head and flat top pistons, both of which are slightly more detonation resistant, but the D is quite resilient when it comes to detonation. If you have it, its not your compression, its your tune.

No printout? You paid? Wasn't a "friend"? It can take a second to get all those knocks out w/o sensors for it. That is where the difference in tuners comes in. Get a second opinion. I've seen colder plugs easier on compression at my altitude though, 200ft.

Definitely switch to a colder plug, and gap it a bit smaller than stock gap. Personally, I've tuned several cars that have no detonation on the dyno - Dynojet, by the way - but get them on the street and they will detonate in 3-4 gear. Dynojet just doesn't simulate real world loading, a mild street tune will be necessary to clean it up for daily driving.

ok so octane booster didnt help....colder plugs didnt help....but retarding the timing a bit at the distributor seems to have gotten rid of it (with ngk zfr6j-11 plugs). So my cam is advanced two degrees...and I had to retard at the dizzy to get rid of the detonation. Am I going to cause any problems running for a while like this until I can get someone else to take a look at the tune? Am I correct in thinking that I should be adjusting the timing through crome and not having to adjust the dizzy? And can someone explain the difference between the ngk ZFR6J-11 and BKR6E-11 plugs?
