View Full Version : Low mileage block?

Right, picked up a block today which supposedly had between 60-70k on it. I removed the head so i could take the block away but noticed there was some movement in one of the pistons. piston 3 was the worst, at some points of the stroke there was about half a mm each side and i was able to "rattle" the piston back and forth. I was planning on boosting the stock block as it had low miles on it, i have another z6 block in the garage with a damaged sleeve. Whats likely to have caused this and im guessing it would be a bad idea to boost this? (didnt get a chance to compression test the motor before i pulled the head but the cross-hatching is good around most of the cylinder wall)

It might have been a good idea to do a compression check. But....... What does the rocker arms look like??? As in color? Kinda golden or dark brown? If its more of a gols color and since you said that the cross hatchings look good, I would run it. But when you do put it back together do a compression check on it just so you know..

i would think the rings weren't sealed correctly. that would mean new rings which means pistsons out and a re-hone no matter what. i wouldn't boost it unless i knew about every part of the block
. But when you do put it back together do a compression check on it just so you know..

yea do that first and see what shows up

yeah, your best bet would have been to do a compression test while the head was on...

yeah wasnt thinking at the time because the mileage was that low. the movement in he piston is only back and forth though, not side to side if that helps. Looks like i have to blocks sitting in my garage that need machine work if i wanna use them now :( If i stick my z6 head on the block i picked up today and crank it over by hand will i get results from the compression test?

i also had a look at the head when i removed it and it was in pretty good condition, no evidence of oil being burned and the guy who sold it to me assured me it came out of a smoke free motor.

it's hard to tell just looking at the tops of the pistons...
shit man, if it was me I'd just run it and see how it does

put the head back on using the old hg, and do a compression check.. the numbers may be low due to the re-used gasket, but if they are consistant id run it

progress halted by breaker bar snapping whilst removing hub nut!! On the plus side my intercooler, rom emulator and tuner toys goodies arrived and i've just paid for some reconditioned dsm's than look sexual. Just a quick question, im starting to think the cold side on my turbo will be too small (.42.48, t28) but i've seen a few nissan t28's on ebay with .60 cold sides;

Would it just be a case of swapping the comp. housing and wheel and fitting them to my centre section and shaft?
