Ok heres the scenario. my father in law just got a car, now it didn't come with the key that locks/unlock the shift stick on park, also is the same key that lock/unlock the inside trunk opener to prevents thief from opening the trunk from inside car. Everytime he needs to open the trunk he has to get out of the car and open it with his regular key. Is there a way that you can get that key, does the dealer have a master key or something just to unlock it so that the trunk can be open from inside the car for now on?
thanks in advance.

go to the dealer and get them to cut a master key for the car.... its a honda right???? just bring the registration and your license, then they will cut the key by the code.......

The original key should unluck everything on the car unless stuff has been replaced or its a valet key?

ok...
the key to unlock the shift lock solenoid, ie the one near park, doesn't really take a particular key. i have used small flathead screwdrivers on it with no problems.

if your father in law can open the trunk from the outside with the key he has then it should be a master key so it should also unlock the inside trunk lock. the valet key will only unlock the doors of the car and crank the car, it won't open the trunk or unlock/lock the inside trunk popper, it also wont let you fold the seats down from inside the car either.

so he should have a master key, if he doesn't he can go to a honda dealership and give them his vin and get a new master key cut. he is also gonna have to provide documentation that he is the owner of the car.

actually i dunno, my dad's previous civic, now my sisters is an 01 ex coupe. the key that starts it wont open the trunk and the key that opens the trunk won't start it. cant remember if both unlock the doors or if only one of them unlocks the doors

my dad bought the car used from carmax so i just figured someone had one of the lock cylinders replaced or something

ok, if all things are perfect, ie all key cylinders never changed, the master key opens (works) all locks, and the valet key opens door and turns ignition only.... now if a key was cut by one of those hand cutters, chances are it may work on some things and not others (depends on how worn the tumblers are and how worn the key is), on the other hand if it was cut by the code on a machine it should be 99% accurate... also the key blanks for a master and a valet key are different, obviously the plastic part (to tell them apart), the blades on a valet are a little thicker.... so you could have a couple of combinations here,,, a master key cut as a valet, and or a valet key cut as a master.... long story short, go to honda, get a master key cut by the key code, and if you want too get a valet.... btw, i work at a :honda: dealership, and i cut these all the time.....

wao!! thank you guys for the reply. First of all is an Accord, but I figure I would put it here. I have three civic myself, 95 EX, 93 SI, 92 DX. My EX came with two keys, one of them open the trunk but the other one doesn't. Both of them open the door and start the car thou. According to the info you guys game me, I guess all honda cars came with two keys. One being the master key, which by what you guys told me, he doesn't have. And the other one Im assuming is the valet key which I think thats the one and only one key he has.

PS- Anybody know how much it would cost to make that master key?
