This weekend my head gasket went and I need the car as a daily driver. My options are fix head gasket for $500CAD, swap in a d15b (tranny and ecu) for $1500CAD, or save some cash by just swapping in the d15b and keeping my dx tranny for around $1000-$1100cad

thanks for your input

I live in Canada where are you from? That is a lot of money to pay for a d15 swap? There are people in T.O and my hometown that will do that swap for $800.

If you just need the car running, fix the head gasket yourself. It's not too hard; just get a torque wrench and buy or download a manual. A friend to help will make things easier.

If you're also going to upgrade, then go ahead with the swap(which I'm assuming is a D15B-VTEC and not another non-VTEC?)

Not really, since you can always swap out the transmission later.

imo yes because the d15b is slow as piss with the dx trans

X2. It's so long. Put it this way, when I had the dx tranny my mini-me set up I ran a 15.9 1/4. I threw in a 2001 si tranny and hit 15.1 with the same set up. Tranny upgrade best bang for you're buck Fo Sho. You can keep you're dx tranny if you like doing 140kmh in third.

Fix it for now and worry about that other stuff later.
It's better to have a slow car than none at all!

head gasket = hour of work

:bull: Sorry, I call BS! :bull:

I've done plenty of headgaskets, I'm trained on engines, and have never even seen some one do one correctly in an hour. A "few" hours is more like it.

thanks for all of your suggestions, but I can't do this myself and to invest money in the motor seems like a waste. So i will just be doing a d15b vtec swap with tranny or a full d16z6 if i can find one.

Just do what is best for you're budget. It seems like thats where this is taking you. Just whatever route you take, shop around and don't get ripped off.

I've done it in about an hour and a half(D16Z6). Not hard if you know what to do.

i bet i could do it in an hour... its all a matter of knowing what size everything is, and what you need to do exactly, and remembering exactly where everything is...

drain coolant and oil
unbolt upper timing cover - 2 10mm bolts
remove v/c - 4 10mm nuts
remove dizzy - 3 12mm bolts and 2 plugs
remove plugs and wires - 5/8 spark plug socket and ur hands
unplug sensors underneath where the dizzy goes
remove intake - 8mm socket or flathead screw driver
remove 2 bolts holding intake mani to the bracket - 12mm
remove all coolant lines and hoses - channel locks
unplug the sensors on the i/m and injectors - flat head and a 10mm socket (for injector wire cover)
loosen timing belt tensioner - 13mm socket
remove header - all 12mm
remove headbolts from middle working out- either 14 or 15mm
remove old hg
reinstall in reverse order...

i honestly could remove all of this in 1/2 hour easy
