I'm a noob when it comes to setting up a network. I tryed to set up a direct connection with a desktop and a laptop and I couldn't get it to work.....
I'm aware of the hardware thats needed but I'm confussed about which brands are better and securing the network. I'm super paranoid and would want the best/ MAX security possible.
LMK playa's!!!!!

Its actually a lot easier than you think. I've attached some screenshots of my setup to give you an idea of what the screens look like. I went with your standard Belkin Wireless G router/modem combo. It has more than enough security. Between it and my software firewall nobody is getting on to my network or stealing my bandwidth without me knowing about it.
First off make sure all your computers on the network belong to the same WORKGROUP, call it whatever you want. The default is MSHOME, I call mine POOPNET, Just right-click on your My Computer -> Properties -> Computer Name and make them match on your PC and laptop. Reboot if necessary.

Then get into your router settings - typically you just bang 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 into your web browser to access the setup. You may have to be plugged into the router via actual RJ-45 LAN cable to set it up initially and then be able to unplug the cable and be completely wireless. Once there, ensure that your DHCP enabled. This means the router will assign IP addresses to the computers on your network (your PC and laptop).

From there choose what kind of wireless security you want setup. 64-bit or 128-bit WEP (randomly generated hexadecimal value) or a PSK - pre-shared key. I went with the PSK, as its a password to get on to my network. Make it a strong one (special characters, numbers, etc.. not "password" or "honda") and you should be good to go.

i just secured my wireless this weekend www.routerlogin.net
you need the default admin password for your router though. they can be found pretty much anywhere online. Google FTW!
good info in here. i will be doing this up at my womans house since i havent installed the wireless stuff.

it's easy if you know what you're doing
but way too much to get into on a forum

Thanks folks. Hit me in PM if you have specific questions about a specific setup or whatnot. I do powerpoint presentations for my folks and my in-laws on how to install their stuff, software and hardware. It makes it easier since I'm overseas and they're in the states. Plus I teach this stuff at work.
Yeah typically your default router logins are 'admin' or 'root' with no password. (Cough....change your passwords folks....cough)

(Cough....change your passwords folks....cough)VERY important. especially since its pretty simple to find out what brand router it is. anyone that's leaching from your network can access it if you dont change the pword
