Maybe the suffix doesn't matter... maybe it's just a batch number or something.

could be. Or the machine number of which one cast it.

(same thing really)

Yeah- same thing... just markings to identify something in the manufacturing process, not necessarily a different design. I'm betting that all the PM3 heads are the same.

Natural gas, started in 96-00 generation of Civics, used a high compression 12.5:1 setup. It was mostly a fleet sales only car.

i just checkd my 90 civic dx and it had a pm9-5...so i guess that means someone put a d15b7 head on it before i got it. its still dpfi so i always figured it would be pm3, then i go to look at it cause i had my hood open and i was shocked to find a pm9-5.

Better head than the b2 IMO, though its probably not much different. Kinda cool that you foun out though. Thats pretty much why I wanted to post these numbers, so people know what they have and what they are buying. You should also be able to find the date stamp on there. Stamped on a circle right next to the casting #'s.

hopefully ill get more out of it when i convert to mpfi, and get a y8 IM on there....since the b7 head was designed for mpfi and the b2 was designed for dpfi...theres gotta be some difference in the cams or something right

Cyl head: P2J-8 (i think, thats whats cast into the front of it)

88-89 (JDM)ZC D16A1 ?

i think that the 86-87 (if there one) is HM-3 and the 88-89 is HM-4. my friend has 2 motors sitting in his shop and that's the numbers. the distributors can't be changed, so they are differnt heads.

The actual casting numbers on the head should be inbetween the exhaust ports or close to the dizzy.

P2J-1 is inbetween the exhaust ports. On the block there is a number as well right under the stamping that says D16Y5. What is a Dizzy?

a dizzy is the feeling you get in your head after trying to figure out part numbers and such.

hondadog,

me and someone else on here have ef's manufactured in canada, and what we have noticed on both of our cars is that even though we have dpfi dx's, we have a pm9 head???

when it was just me with the pm9 head i thought someone just swapped it over cause they had one lying around, but after hearing from this guy, whos car was also made in canada, it makes me think that canadian ef's with dpfi came with a pm9 head from the factory

my question is this, what cam does it have?? a pm3 out of a d15b2 designed for dpfi?? or a pm9 out of a d15b7 designed for mpfi???

thanks
andy

Well guess what? PM9-6 and next to that is the ate stamp 91. Makes me wonder if I made a mistake or if there was a difference in the US vs CAN Honda's. My guess is that the canadians were using the new b7 head when our market was using the old b2 head in 91. Of course I could be wrong and there actually be no difference either. We need to get some more people with USA b2 88-91 heads to confirm this. And also 88-90 Canadian b2's. What does the date stamp read on yours. Its right next to the casting #. Maybe the only thing they changed on the head is the cam specs when the b7 came out.

not sure of the casting id but on the d16z1 head (which is fitted to a hrv which is a small 4wd type vehicle over here in the uk) the head has the same camshaft as the d16y7

are different generations of EX models both having vtec head interchangable?
like a 95 EX with PO8 and a 98 EX with P2J. I know they are different by OBD1 and OBD2 but that may only be the sensors. I found some links to comparasons but they were dead links.

Yes you can interchange them.
