So it finally happened. My poor 1990 CRX HF of 248,000 miles didn't start. When attempting to start it, the starter or starter silanoid clicks like crazy when you try to start it. The battery is fine, the car has power, stereo and lights work fine. Any guesses? I'm to the point of just dropping in the new motor but i dont' want to pay for a tow.

clicks like crazy? sounds like low voltage. did you just use a volt meter to see if the battery was good, or did you actually do a load test? a lot of times batteries will hold 12v, but as soon as there is a load they drop like crazy...

what usually works if its a starter issue, have someone hold the key in the start position, and hit the starter with a hammer/wrench/etc and see if it will crank over then

the battery sounds low, it can still power the accessories fine but not have enough juice to engage the starter solenoid, or actually crank the starter

Yeah, the starter clicks a shitload, like if one of the battery terminals were loose. I cleaned the terminals and even tried to jump start it with my Si, still didn't start. It's weird. I'll try tapping the starter. The engine doesn't even attempt to turn over.

I may try the old "push and pop" to bypass the starter to see if it's even capable of running anymore.

You sure it's not the MAIN relay clicking?
If it is, it's probably just a bad ground...

I have no idea. the click comes from the starter area. Is there a ground just for the starter?

It could be that your alt went bad leading to low charge on the batt. You should try having it charged at autozone , they do it free =D

It'd be odd of a ground came loose, because i just start the car once a week and it sits the rest of the time.

from reading the first post it sounds like the batt is low to me, still a mystery tho huh?

Unfortunately, been busy with work, haven't looked at it since the first post. I may not bother with it since there's a pretty good chance the swap is going in next week.

248k miles on the starter?

Perhaps it needs to be laid to rest.

At around 225k miles all the electrical components in my 84 Accord started to shit to bed. Aternator, starter, fuel pump, and heater fan. They didn't fail mechanically, the brushes just wore out. I either rebuilt or replaced them and kept going to 300k.

Hmm, when i turn on the headlights it's really dim and the interior electronics take a loss. The door beeper goes from a keen "beep beeep" to a depression, dieing duck "buuueeerreep, burrrreeppepp" So, it's a good chance it just the stupid battery. However, because the car has been sitting so long a few of the tires are flat so i need to find a bike up and then its ON with the push and clutch pop. I just got my header and exhaust yesterday...so, that's good news.

Get someone to give you a jump. Charge your battery. If your altenator is on its way out, it'll drain your battery while the cars off, right? Something to think about.

definately the silenoid sometimes you can open them ,and clean all of the crap built up in there, but thats only a temporary fix. replace silenoid or starter all together which evers cheaper.

Had the wife push the car and I popped the clutch, started like a champ. Maybe I just had bad jumper cables...
