First of all I have a 1990 DX hatch no tach
I bought of ebay an item that says 88-91 CRX tach plug and play with 90-91 Civic and CRX's.Well it doesnt work
1.Whats the difference in the two tachs.I think the 90-91 has the bigger seatbelt light, right?
2.Does anyone know how to wire a 88-89 gaugle cluster into a 90 Civic DX?

It should work. I had a 90 dx and a 91 std and I used a 91 crx si cluster in both of them. The only thing I can think of is that the blue tach wire needs to be run from the strut tower harness to the gauge cluster.

plugs look the same, but there is a difference in the wiring between 88/89 and the 90/91. i just put a civic dx no tach cluster in my 88 crx dx. (have an a/m tach and think having 2 is tacky)
wiring is a little tedious because you have to switch around about a dozen wires or so.. but it is possible. took me about 3 hours start to finish.. and that included modifying the mounts for it and everything.
and another thing.. you need to get the cluster cover from the 88/89 as well.. your 90 has a rounded hood while the 88/89 is squared.

here, this might help.. it's a copy of the wiring code i had posted at SHO.
sure thing.. looking at the back of both clusters, smaller plug being A larger one being B
also numbered from left to right of each one
88 crx dx cluster (with tach):
A1..... ground
A2..... speedo
A3..... <empty>
A4..... e-brake (-)
A5..... seat belt (-)
A6..... hi beams (+)
A7..... trunk/hatch (-)
A8..... right turn signal (+)
B1..... left turn signal (+)
B2..... +12volt
B3..... fuel guage
B4..... oil (-)
B5..... cel (-)
B6..... illumination (+)
B7..... illumination (-)
B8..... <empty>
B9..... battery (+)
B10... battery (-)
B11... tach
B12... temp guage
91 civic dx cluster (no tach):
A1..... ground
A2..... speedo
A3..... <empty>
A4..... trunk/hatch (-)
A5..... seat belt (-)
A6..... fuel guage
A7..... +12volt
A8..... right turn signal (+)
B1..... left turn signal (+)
B2..... hi beams (+)
B3..... temp guage
B4..... illumination (+)
B5..... illumination (-)
B6..... door (-)
B7..... e-brake (-)
B8..... oil (-)
B9..... cel (-)
B10... battery (+)
B11... battery (-)
B12... <empty>
and by battery, i don't mean +12v and ground.. the two wires run the battery dummy light.
sorry i didn't write down wire colors, i went by purely location when i did mine. some wires it might be easier to de-pin, but i just cut the original wire 1 inch away from plug.. made it easier to go back and say "now which one of these wires came from b7 again?" just look at small piece or wire coming out of plug at b7 and grabbed wire that was same color. also, de-pinning won't work for a few wires, cuz you have to extend them from one side of opening to the other.
also, remember the rules here.. solder and heatshrink/tape everything. don't want any shorts back there =P
also remember that since your cluster wasn't designed with a tach, you're gonna have to tap it at the distibutor (should be blue wire) and run it to cluster location.. it will go to b11 on your converted plug.

yes.. i have an 88crx dx and the cluster i installed came from a 91civic dx.. you just have to change the wires around so that they match up with the new cluster's plugs.
