What's up y'all? just found the forum and have been reading around. i kind of like the idea of the d-series builds. i just bought a 92 cx that burns oil like a mofo. blue smoke screen and all...i was thinking of doing a b-series swap as i have owned a 93 DA and love the ls motor. never owned vtec before though. i was looking around b/c my budget is VERY low and it would take me a while to save up for a swap...with my motor running like crap, i was considering just getting a sohc vtec..... i like the idea of running the d-series becuase while b-series puts out those numbers, its more fun in my book to try to bulid the most out of something so underestimated. still toying around with ideas..i'm more of an n/a person mostly becuase i like to step on the gas and go right away, although there are probably some boosted d-series that run VERY well i'm sure (i know a guy who had a k-series in a vx and was smoked by a boosted sohc vtec, although he didnt have it tuned at the time, untuned running k-pro he put down 227 whp and he was sore as hell when he got smoked on the highway) okay now i'm rambling....so i'll be searching around like a blind man for his socks and getting lots of good info...any suggestions? dont have a lot of cash....thanks and i'm happy to be a part of this forum!
peace :TU:
you could look into a d15b sohc vtec motor from Japan to get your car up and running smoothly without spending a whole lot of money. They usually go for under $500.
Sohc motors are great, you can produce some nice power for not a whole lot of money. My d has put a lot of dohc motors to shame, even built ones. Anyway, I still prefer working on my sohc motors compared to the dohc motors in my other 2 cars.

how much cash. what is the primary use for the car. dd. weekend warrior. auto-x.. and the sohc vtecs make 10 less hp at teh crank for 400 dollars less than the ls. =).
and with the right sized turbo you wont notice any lag. 3.2k rpm im at full boost . dont notice any lag.... and that example of the k swap gettin smoked by a sohc turbo is one of the main reasons we have d's under our hoods. =) its cheaper funner and usually faster .

If you did want to go the turbo route, the JDM D15B Vtec Mrnicolas mentioned LOVES boost. It's a great mild n/a engine as well, and has good power stock as well.
Thats be the way to go if you want some umph.

i just checked my post and just as you all said d15b thats what i've been looking at on ebay...but i'm hesitant with ebay motors...and with the tranny i have now, wont that keep the d15b from running its true potential..and yes..i've been considering boost..a lot actually, just a little shakin' by all that goes into it...that will be in the future though...i'm using this car as a DD to work and such but like everybody else building their DD, i just want it to be fun to drive with some pep. so i guess with that said, now i'm on the prowl for the d15b, possibly a different tranny? need the computer too and also this guy on ebay is selling his full d15b swap w/ si tranny with a b16 dist. and b16 ecu. will that really work? dont really know for sure he's asking 850obo plus shipping. so whats a good price to buy just the engine and ecu? i dont wanna get shafted. here's the cx i bought a few days ago, its a little banged up but it'll work and cosmetics are last on my list anyways....

If it were me in your shoes, I would look for the lowest mileage d16z6 swap I could afford. Get the engine, wiring harness, trans, ecu. Then replace the exhaust asap, the CX system is SMALL.

how much will a d16z6 swap cost me?

I've seen them go from $350-850. But if you can find them in a local wrecking yard, you may be able to get it for even less.

and the advantages the d16z6 over the d15b?

Displacement, and you'll have an easier time getting one cheaper.

the d16 will hold boost, and mods alot better than a d15 unbuilt, because the connecting rods are thin on the d15 and their is better after market for the d16

I vote 2nd gen ZC for ease of installation and bang for buck.

hmotoronline usually have a good selection of motors. i just checked right now they say they are outta stock on the zc dohc and zc vtec as well as the d15b. so.. just keep an eye out for those motors. and you will have a good lil car . any one that you pick . =). z6 .. d15b and zc vtec are really close in relation the dohc zc is non vtec has less aftermarket support . but we are the underdogs =). good luck

I think i'm calling some junkyards today just to get some reference...so the general consensus is? d16z6? i would like to add that out of all the forums i've ever been on, i've never seen so many responses to a n00b in so little time....wow. makes staying sohc that much better! Thanks y'all. d16z6 then? that swap would be the si tranny too right? so all id need is motor, tranny, ecu and.....

yea you can run the si tranny or ex tranny.. if your gonna get the si makesure its not for the 99-00 si..
z6 swap in a cx is really easy.. like you said.. motor tranny ecu wiring harness then all you have to do is run the vtec pressure switch and vtec solinoid wires from the ecu to the firewall plugs

excellent. if i cant get a si or ex tranny i'm guessing my cx one will still bolt up? just not geared for the motor....
quick question, why does it say i have zero posts?

it's because you talked for a bit and explained the situation and what you were thinking. So many n00bs come here and make a thread with only "What turbo should I use?", then don't even list the motor, much less anything else. Props for being a non-n00bish n00b.
Yes, the CX tranny should just bolt up.
You have 0 posts because posts in this forum and patry&BS don't count. Check the forum rules, it should mention which forums posts don't count in.

ahh...i'll read rules more carefully, i usually just skim through them. and thanks for the props. i'll be posting my progress on here with probably way too many pics just as soon as i can get a hold of my motor (i'm getting anxious just thinking about it) so look out for that and thanks to y'all again.

Ya, I don't pay attention to post count, got that out of my system in a computer forum I moderate, so I don't know which forums count and which don't.
You wanna rethink that "too many pics" comment? you are in "pix or die" territory... :D

Hey I was cruising through ebay and found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110101261154&fromMakeTrack=true
a zc out of an eg5? this is a full swap so i was wondering if this engine is even worth a damn. i've been looking for d16z6's but i've found more d15b on ebay at least. most of the junk yards i've called tell me to come down and look b/c they dont know the difference? or their prolly just lazy. i dunno. what you guys think?
