What's the purpose of the wings folding in flight? I though that was just for air craft carrier deck space.

SPEED

Tomcat F14 and Lancer B1 were the first aircraft with swing wing systems.(sometimes called B wing confs)
When wings are close to the body mach speeds are easy to achieve, for more stability and combat behavior they had to open the wings...

It's like v-tec for wings!

But the hydro system was so expensive in manteniance that new aircrafts were designed to replace the f14... the F16 falcon and the F18 Hornet
