Put them in a box together and leave them alone for a while... whichever one comes out alive is piston #1.

I've always just set the crank and cam sprocket at the currect TDC marks and then keeping tension on the forward side of the belt pulled the belt up over the cam sprocket. Rotate the engine once (counter-clock-wise!! or it will jump teeth and well... its just the wrong way) and check to see if its correct, then rotate 3 cam teeth and torque the tensioner bolt (33 ft/lbs).

The first piston on the drivers side is the #1 piston. The one closest to the distributor is #4. Hope that helps.. Fairly simple

i was working with the correct number one (driver side) but i having problems finding TDC i got it statrted a minute ago but it wasnt right.im using a feeler stick on the #1 plug hole to make sure the piston is all the way up then double checking by temporarily putting the lower t. cover ,and crank pulley back on with woodruff key and lining up the three lines on the pulley with the sights on the t.cover after reinstalling the belt with tension on the front side of the belt and then tuning counterclock wise three teeth then tightening the tensioner and still i end up off time anybody know what i might be doing wrong?

Look on the crank pulley and there will be a spot with 2 grooves and just after that there will be 3 grooves. line it up in the middle groove of the 3 grooves and that will be TDC.. (on most d motors)
