I remember see on the old site a forum talking about the different gearing in the different trannys but can't find it on here.

What I would like to know is what is the difference between the Y7 tranny and the Y8 tranny. I did the Y8 head swap thing and I was under the understanding that the trannies where nearly the same but now I am being told that they are not. Can some one fill me in on the Y7 and the Y8 tranny differences or post the old forum that I saw.

Thanks

Simply put:
Y7 tranny= Longer gears, slower accelleration
Y8 Tranny= Shorter gears, quicker accelleration

What sort of time difference would that give me on the 1/4 mile. Lets compare a d16y8 with a y8 tranny and a d16y8 with a y7 tranny. They would have the same hp but the d16y8 with the y8 tranny would be faster but by how much? What is the best tranny for the d16y8 engine for running the 1/4?

The best tranny is the Y8 tranny for 1/4 mile. Not sure about the difference in time. Is significant though. Just realize te Y8 tranny is designed to keep you in the engines powerband once you shift up. Y7 tranny bring you below the powerband, thus not allowing the same acceleration.

y7- 3.72 final drive
y8- 4.25 or 4.26 final drive...i forget-

Back in the day when i swapped my first y8 trans onto my old y7 before it was built, i shaved half a second in the quarter, but I was not the most skilled driver then (or now) so the gains could be more...

I have to admit, I'm not understanding the difference between longer and shorter, what does that mean exactly ? As in.... it will last longer until it's time to switch gears? Isn't that determined by the compression of your motor and redline though? Sorry, n00b question...

Alright....
When you are running a tranny with short gears, you will find that when you shift up a gear, you will still be in a relatively close rpm range as the previous gear. This allows you to keep your engine operating in its highest powerband, allowing good accelleration.

When you are running a tranny with longer gears, you will find that when you shift up a gear, you will rpm range will drop significatnly, taking you out of your power band. This slows down accelleration quite a bit.

Just think of riding a bike with gears. If you swith up one gear, you still move quick with barely any additional effort. If you switch two gears instead of 1, it takes a lot more effort. Same idea here with the trannys.

the y8 tranny will make the your car quicker, i think bone had said on average that the ex tranny swap was worth 1/2 a sec.
