View Full Version : Distributor Advance 25 degrees? wtf?

Okay, so i did the a6 cam swap.. When i put the cam in i had to advance the distributor fully to get a good idle.. It was about 11 degrees advanced or so.

I get a y7 cam gear and put it on, and set the timing back to center (i don't have a timing light, so i just eyeballed it).. Now my friend has a timing light and we check the timing, and *somehow* the timing light is telling me that the distributor is 25 degrees advanced. What the hell? So we retard the distributor a little and get it down to about 13 degrees advanced.. I only have about a 5th of an inch of space until the distributor is fully retarded.. We didnt retard it fully and then check the timing again because we didnt think it would be safe for it to be fully retarded like that...

Now my question is this, why the HELL is my timing advanced so much? I dont believe that the d-series has vacuum advance or anything, so what's going on?

All help is really appreciated.. I dont think my car is up to its full potential because of this.

Wrong cam gear. The cam timing is off and the distributor runs off of the camshaft. Fix it!

A7cam gear=Y8, so the timing is definitely off.

^^not true, a6 cam in b7 needs a y series cam gear to correct the 1/2 tooth timing error due to the shorter deck height...

i just did this swap last night you need a6 cam d16y8 cam gear to correct the problem and i didnt even touch the distributor and timing was dead on pefect idle there is a write up by Transzex somewhere on here if you still have probs

nvm; I just re-read it(i was thinking D16 block); he had advanced the timing before thus when he corrected it, it was too far ahead.

Stock timing at idle with everything warmed up is 16 degrees.

did you check the timing with car at full temp (both rad hoses hot) and idle @750-800 rpm?

Who needs a timing light, proved Ryan wrong last night. Dropped Crane 0012 cam in his A6, I set timing by ear, then let him check it with a light......

bouncing between 16-17 degrees......yep, good enough!

Oh. So my car is fine then? If anything its actually 3 degrees retarded since its supposed to be 16 degrees advanced?

This is odd. haha.. I never heard of a distributor running advanced on purpose in a stock car.

This makes me wonder "why?"

Why? more complete burn/efficiency; when the spark plug ignites, it takes awhile for the fuel mixture to completely burn....advancing it gives it more time to burn before the exhaust valves open. At high rpm+WOT, the timing can advance as much as ~40 degrees.

Sounds good to me dude..

Thanks for all the help guys.
