Which brand are you using? How do you like it? Is it actually plug and play?

I want to an external hard drive to back up my files and store media. I'm aware of enclosures but I don't even have an extra hard drive with even close to the space that I'm looking for. LMK whats up.

I have 2 Western Digital Ext Hard Drives! One is about 300 Gigs w/power over USB, and the other is a 250 Gig that I use a lot. I have heard about other people having problems with Western Digital, but I have not once had a problem with mine. They work pretty good to me! Also another brand to look into is Seagate, those are another really good brand but cost a little more. Oh and one more thing, they are plug and play depending on the OS your running.

power over USB?? It's just going to be for backing up my harddrive and then I'm going to remove it.

Get the terrabyte cube!! :D

This is first on my shopping list once I get back home :TU:

Works out to about $2 GB which isn't bad at all for an external enclosure, especially that size.

But that's probably a tad overboard  Something in the 1-200GB range should be plenty for backup purposes. WD and maxtor are the two big names out there. I tend to lean towards WD since I have more experience with their products and have never done me wrong in the past.

Yeah they are making devices that power up by using USB. This takes away having to look for a power outlet if they are all taken up. It also cleans up the amount of messy cables. So instead of having 2 cables coming out of the hard drive, you would just have the USB cable to plug in.

Top Brands in my opinion: Seagate and Western Digital! Havent really dealt with Maxtor, but they are a pretty known company.

Buiold your own external and save some money. Look for enclosures at Newegg, price out a decent hard drive, put the two together (just make sure the drive will fit in the enclosure you buy), and you're done.

Only problem with using the USB power is that the raed times are slow... FUCKING SLOW. It's not so bad with the 3.5" drives, but with the full 5.25" drives you can kiss your low latency good-bye. :|

i have a seagate 100gb portable (love it), and had a seagate 300 gb ext...only reason i got rid of the 300gb was because at the time i only had a laptop and needed more space, but since im building a desktop i dont need the ext anymore...

I have an 80GB Western Digital I Keep all my music on it and it works great. As long as you have USB 2.0 you don't have to worry about it being slow. If you don't have USB 2.0 then yes it will be slow as shit. I would have to say either go with Western Digital or Seagate those are the best.

dont spend more than 100 bucks for anything less than a 200 gb external drive... 250 gig hard drives are 60 bucks and you can get an external enclosure for less than 20 bucks... check pricewatch.com for exact prices, but you can definately build it for less...

250 gb external hd from bestbuy = $100
homemade 250 gb hd = $80 give or take

its like the difference between HMT and Greddy :)

An external HD is a great idea. I love mine. I got a 500 gig Western Digital.

Newegg is the place to buy one.
