View Full Version : a few z6 tranny questions...

I have a 93dx coupe with the stock tranny (no grinds, great condition). I have a z6 tranny in good condition that i would like to drop in my car, due to the closer gear ratio but 2nd gear is in need of replacing on this transmission other than that the tranny only has around 50k! I also have a hf tranny out of a 90crx d15b2 that is in perfect condition, and I saw on MistaBone's tranny write up that you can use the 3rd gear out of the hf as the 4th gear in the z6 tranny. My question is how hard is it to replace the gears in a transmission??? I have done pretty much everything else to a a honda, but have yet to crack open a transmission! :o So it is time to pop my cherry and this seems like the perfect opportunity to do it! Oh ya other than the 2nd gear on the z6 tranny, everything else on all 3 tranny's is in perfect working order! I am also contemplating putting the 3rd and 4th gears out of the crx si tranny but im not sure which route is better so here I am posting. I mainly do not post as I would rather read and learn, but this time around I really could use some help! Any help will be much appreciated and THANK YOU in advance...and MistaBone or Transzex I hope you see this thread...

without adding the ZC 3rd also, it's not worth changing to a 1.033/1.066 4th.
Changing to the .9375 CRX 4th helps a little but nothing OMG about it.

Why do you say that?

because you still have the long 2-3 spread, then a stoopid close 3-4 shift
7200 rpm 3-4 shift the rpms only drop to 6000

so should i just replace the 2nd gear in the z6 tranny and just sell the other tranny's for $$ for other part's? and just leave the z6 tranny with the stock gearing? and is there a write-up to a procedure on how to do this? like i said i have never cracked a tranny open before, but im sure if i had a tutorial it wouldn't be too difficult. I think I found one before on either here or sohcforums but I cannot find it anymore.

or should i do both the 3rd and 4th out of which tranny? and what about the ls 5th while i have it apart?

i found the write-up...wow transmission internals are complicated. I can tear apart a laptop blind folded but hell if i know the inner workings of a transmission.

how do you know second gear is bad in the Z6 tranny?
aequitas = the new beav!
not meant as a flame, only me and Matt will understand it :)

lol to tranny's yes i am the "new beav"...anyways...i got it from a buddy that i helped swap a gsr in his car and he had no second gear (which was part of the reason he did he swap)...me myself i don't like dual cams, and he gave me all of his single cam stuff when i helped him do the swap...if i knew anyone that could do this i would get them to, but unfortunately i do not. So i figured i might as well take a stab at it rather than go and get bent over at a transmission shop! unless anyone in cali or close to cali can do this for me!!! :D

well, if I can help Gary in South Africa, you should be able to work your way thru a tranny.
You will appreciate Honda trannys after looking at a Scion tC tranny, I've been asked to install the just released TRD/Quaife that just came to market.

lol well then we are opposite...im a nite owl and your the early bird! :D
anywho...so how hard is it really to replace this 2nd gear and should i trade any other gears out of any of my other tranny's or just use the z6 when i get it fixed...i just absolutely cannot stand this dx tranny and when i add the a6 cam, y8 cam gear, and p28 this weekend it will be screaming for a shorter tranny!

i'd say fix the z6 cuz it's the faster tranny of the two

I've never replaced 2nd, just fix the bearing.
2nd gear is machined into the mainshaft, changing is not easy.

aww crap...so it looks like im going to have to take it to a transmission shop, get a ridiculous quote and have to sell it on egay and then buy a good tranny...cause if YOU ARE saying 2nd gear is hard to replace there is no way i am going to figure it out without the help of an expert...i cant believe transmissions are that much more complicated than laptop's...well there are a hell of alot more moving part's inside that has got to be why! :hammer:

well my good friend that i got the transmission from said that 2nd gear was completely out that it wouldn't even go into 2nd gear at all...i hope that helps narrow it down some...i REALLY appreciate your help and input on this Bone cause i know you are the man (as you didn't already know this)...and hey if you get a chance check out my other thread in the forced induction section about what to do with my low compression turbo motor build...
http://www.d-series.org/forums//showthread.php?t=56365
if you have any other comments or suggestions on a possible build that would be better i am all ears...i have also contemplated selling the y8 block that is listed for a a6 :D...
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS...SOHC FTW!

other than that all i can think of is to crack open the case and take close-up pic's and see if you could identify the problem...im at the mercy of the d-series family...

could be a broken shifter fork locking you out of second.......
or in my case, locked me INTO second.

he is probably just trying to up his post count...anyways...i don't have the helms manual for my car just the haynes, is there anything in the helms regarding this? or is there a book regarding transmissions i can read and learn? or how am i going to do this brother...im more than will to learn and i have a ton of part's laying around so time is not an issue...i just drove orange county last night to pickup a bunch of things and this dx tranny was just killing me going through the grapevine with a longblock, shortblock, and another transmission in my coupe...thing was BOGGED down...kinda like you and your tranny runs! :D

I never bog, just downshift!
Look at the sticky at the top of this forum, it's the Helms manual. If it doesn't work (Bense's fault!) then I can email it to you.

would you please email it to me...link is broken for me... ;(

thanks a bunch Mista!

and btw ya i was downshifting just was trying to be lazy and be easy on the gas mileage...some yohoo in a 2002 ex with a fart can tried to pull on me...it was funny. (gf got a lil mad tho cause she hates it when i "race," she insisted on coming along for the ride...and i REALLY could have used the room...fkn women.)
and if you can send me that base map that you hold to you so dearly for your setup cause once i pop this a6 cam and p28 in i want to learn to burn my own chips and that would be real fun to play with... :D I have pretty much your setup for now while i build my boost motor...I would have installed the cam earlier but I do not have a torque wrench and my buddy has been to focused on getting the kinks out of his turbo setup before he takes it to church's...im about to just go and buy one tomorrow at Auto Zone (i have a $20 gift card) cause i desperately want this cam in (that and im not the greatest at putting the timing belt on, but i found a sticky that is rather helpful...my buddy has a way that takes him literally 30seconds to slide his timing belt back on he has perfected it so much)...and its just each and individual's motor that has affect on the retard/advance to correct the 1/2 tooth error when using the y8 cam gear...
your my god Mista.

so you think that's what it could be? cause im going to take a stab at it in the next few days when i clear all this stuff out that i just bought and organize the rest...it's funny how fast your garage starts to resemble a junkyard.

+1 on broken shifter fork. like bone said, 2nd is machined onto the output shaft. to replace, you have to replace the entire shaft. no worries though, since you'd have to work REALLY friggin hard to actually break the gear itself. you'll break other chit in a stock gearbox long before you break 2nd gear.

im going to have to print this baby out...so far its just a headache on the computer...and looks like im going to have to buy a few tools for this...how much is the shifter fork and the part's to put the transmission back together? cause im starting to wonder if its going to cost more for the part's plus the tool's i need for this, or just to take it to a shop...I would just die to see my friend's face's if i could actually pull this off tho...and it would be fun (i day this now then when i bust my knuckles i curse to high heaven...i hate being huge and worknig on honda's!) and one hell of a learning experience!

bump...Bone is there any advice you can give me when going to crack this baby open? I just want to make sure I can at least get it back together the way it is if i get lost...
