how can you make your stock flywheel lighter is there a process to do this? what is the weight of a stock wheel in a y8? what can you get them down to?

U can take it to a machine shop. Your prolly better off getting a aftermarket flywheel.

If you lived in Los Angeles, there's a place that will do it very nicely for $35. Lightened and Balanced. They're called West Coast Fiero.

Lightend stock flywheel=blown apart metal chunks exiting your bell housing and probebly out your hood.

People have been lightning flywheels for years, and there is a misunderstanding that lighter is weaker.
Ordinarily yes but in this case it depends how you take the material off.
When there is less material there is less mass and therefore less rotational inertia and centrifuegal force so it doesn't have to be as strong.

When taking material off make sure you leave a decent material thinkness arong the centre and behind the clutch plate, from there out you can pretty much go nuts.
Mine is about as thin as you could safely go and is so thin towards the outside I had to weld on the ring gear because I had turned the seat that it presses up against right off.
If you take material out from behind the clutch face you reduce the capability to heat sink and you'll probably end up with hot spots and heat stress.
I had mine balenced up as part of the whole rotating assembly right down to the pressure plate bolts and crank pully key.

See what happens if it develops a hairline crack and you dump the clutch. I'd rather pay for SFI testing to way higher RPM than my car will ever see.

it also depends on what you are doing with the car. the light 8lb flywheels are good for autox, and the 12 lb ones are more suited towards drag racing. some will argue stock is best for drag racing, so you can decide for yourself from there. but i think most agree on the light weight one for auto x.

if you dont have traction problems, dont mess with it.

unless you change your clutch....then you should get it resurfaced.

When it's time for me to change flywheel, I'm just going to buy a good one. No reason to take the risk of something going wrong just to save a couple bucks.

just make sure you get the one best suited to your purpose.

well, after reading all of this, it kind of gives me stress...I had my stock flywheel lightned, but only about 20 percent, however, if done properly, there should be no problems with lightning the stock fw, it just depends where they take the material from..

That DSM one is straight stock, but that's just an FYI. Nothing taken off IIRC.

You Americans and Euro's have got it sweet, if a flywheel lets go in a right-hand drive Honda it's good-bye ballbags.

I think it was cut down.......

I have some scattershields for sale. They are made for 1G DSM trannies and are brand new. VERY easy to install. This is a must if using a lightened flywheel....Scot
