View Full Version : Clutch Problems or Tranny?

So starting the end of summer, my 2nd gear started to not work. And now, it's just really bad.

I can put the shifter into 2nd gear with the clutch in, but once I try to engage 2nd, it grinds like no other. If I pull on the shifter very very hard and hold it, 2nd gear works 60% of the time. When I race and pound 2nd, there's zero problems.

Also, when I first start the car, there's a very huge noticeable difference in sound change when I engage/disengage the clutch. When I push it down, I just hear the motor at 1.5k RPM's warming up. But when I let the clutch go, I hear the clutch hit and it makes a hard low pitched whining sound (like it's having a hard time mating the clutch with the tranny).

Also, when I'm driving, and I engage any gear, it makes the same noise I stated above. When I hit the gas it goes away a little bit, but I went let off the gas, sound comes back.

So you think it's the clutch assembly or tranny? It's in the shop right now and my dad'll call me as soon as the guy get's around to working on it.

Grinding is gears/tranny, and the whining sound is probaly your flywheel not being machined right and needs to be replaced.

Makes sense.

I dunno which ones more expensive but I hope it's the cheaper one lol. My brother's paying for the expenses but I really don't wanna look for a new tranny.

whining = input shaft bearing died from low oil

2nd gear = countershaft clutch side bearing has walked out, you've ruined the shifter fork and maybe other parts by forcing it and holding it into 2nd.

about $250 or more to fix.

It started grinding way before I held it in. I started holding it in maybe a month after it kept happening. Before I started to hold it in, it just kept getting worse and worse so I stopped using it. Tried every once in a while.

Bearing/seal/thrust washer is under $35, but then add shipping.

I think my "business" account got approved at local dealership :)

I've had problems with my second gear for almost 20000 clicks now...its not bad when I shift up through the gears, unless I'm pound the shit out of 2nd and third, then I get a bit of grind, but if I drive it like my granny, no problems until I downshift...I'm thinkin its synchros...but in your case, I go with transzex...

yeh its definetely the tranny, i had the same problem in my rex and it only gets worse, it started to leak fluid and since it was already fucked i just said the hell with it im puttin another one in it anyways, so when i pulled it out the bearings on the input shaft were in fact tore all to hell, no special oil mounts or anything fix this problem, just pull it out and replace with a new one, and its prolly not clutch cuz i thought the same thing and when i pulled mine out it looked like a brand new one, but i went ahead and put a new one in it anyways

Damnit. Thanks guys.

I'm still gonna tell my dad to shop around and find cheapest prices and see if theres any other way to fix the car other than tranny.
