Technique to measure a cam for specs?

Does anyone have a link, or knows a fool proof method of how to correctly measure a cam for specs? It is not motor or vehicle specific, just wanting to know and learn how to do this, tools, etc, so if one comes along in the future I'll be able to figure out what it is.

Much appreciated, just trying to learn and yes I did search, no luck.
