what stops you from using an obd1 engine with and obd0 ecu? i dont quite understand the concept.

Some easily replacable or addable wireing.

One example is that on an obd0 car you usually have a one wire o2, on 0bd1 its a 4-Wire o2. Its mainly just different connections to various sensors. You also need to match the ECU to the engine, that is unless you chip it.
