ok my newest project rolled in the shop today. were doing a H2B setup in my buddys hatch. he already has a built type r (jdm gsr block, ITR head, CTR pistons) in it, but now he wants more. we are going to use the b16 tranny, axles, harness, and mounts on it. i know that the b16 differential is the weakest of the b-series. we've looked at quaife and kaaz, but prices are crazy compared to the OBX. i have seen many threads about having to modify them on d-series. is the b-series the same way? and are there any other cheaper alternatives.

I have an alternative that's better but not cheaper: sell the B16 trans and buy either a 96-97 ITR or a CTR trans. Same gearing as B16 but comes with OEM LSD.

i told him to do this. hes debating on selling the b16 trans and getting a ITR trans. he likes the idea. but he has to come up with another 700 bucks to throw in and get the ITR

You talking about the 98+ spec ITR with the 4.785 FD?

I think it's generally the same with obx lsds, regardless of application...
Remember, the "problems" are due to sluggish work by the manufacturer.

I would get the ITR tranny if I had the money, because the close gears are great.
But if that's not the primary objective, then I think the obx would certainly do the job.
I'm looking into getting one myself soon.

my friend was thinking of doing an h2b swap in his hatch... we have talked to my tuner for a few hours about it.. ( cause hes already second gen b16 with b16lsd trans ) and he told us to use a gsr lsd trans.. that the h22 has alot of tq and you will just spin the short gears all day long..

idk its something to think about.. plus the gsr lsd is cheaper then the itr

Keep the short gearing, but swap the FD. short gears keep the shift in the powerband. Use the FD to "tune" the torque multiplication.

well over on HT. skunked is running mid 12s on a close to stock engine with a b16 trans. my buddy is going to be on Nitto DR at all times on the street, and on slicks at the track. he is getting a traction bar setup before the engine even goes it. so traction is not really the goal, more or less the fact that we dont want to break the b16 lsd. its gonna have a 100 shot on it, so i think we're gonna be pushing it too hard.

the shortest one. i am a firm believer that the shorter ratio honda trannys are faster on any app. period. un less your going like 160 MPH in the 1/4. then you gotta change stuff up a bit.

exactly. 98+ JDM ITR trans has the longer gsr 4th and 5th.

USDM ITR trans + 4.785 FD is better IMO.

he's still considering the ITR. but he still wants me to keep asking about the OBX. what exactly has to be modified on them. and what are the negatives to them. thanks for the help guys.

Great write-up on Honda-Tech. Will be doing this myself in a while :)
